Page 46 February 2013 Bucket List Foundation ful fi lls end-of-life dreams By Margaret Ann Lippincott When hospice nurse Kimberly Iverson turned 40 last year she decided to celebrate by checking off one of her bucket list items – starting a nonpro fi t foundation. Having seen too many seniors in their last stages of life lonely and forgotten, she wanted to try to bring joy into as many lives as possible. Iverson founded the Phoenix-based Bucket List Foundation to ful fi ll wishes of terminally ill seniors. Wish candidates must be at least 50, an Arizona resident, have a diagnosis of a terminal illness certi fi ed by a physician, be unable to ful fi ll the wish on their own and capable to experience the wish. The foundation has granted more than 30 wishes to Arizona seniors in hospice care. Wishes could be as simple as airline fl ights for one’s children and grandchildren to visit, or as extravagant as going on a cruise to the Bahamas. All wishes need volunteer nursing support. “What is amazing and really touching is rejoining families, often reconciling and reuniting, before someone passes,” Iverson said. One woman just needs to get to her daughter’s wedding across town. The woman has suffered from polio all her life and has other diseases making her unable to care for herself. Quality Senior Transport will donate a vehicle for the event and Iverson will give nursing support during the short journey to and from the wedding. Iverson volunteers as the hospice nurse for almost all the wishes. “I am not in this for any other reason than being a hospice nurse and hearing all the things that my patients said they wanted to do,” she said. The Bucket List Foundation so far as operated mainly on private and in-kind donations such as airline fl ights, hotel stays, fi shing excursions, helicopter rides, sports and concert tickets and senior transportation. “The Arizona Cardinals were kind enough to give in-kind donations,” she said. “We are excited they also want to support our organization on a deeper level.” More information is available at BucketListFoundation.org. Modern salon brings ideas not haircuts to local heads By Jasmine Barta Since the 16th century, intellectuals throughout the world have gathered to discuss relevant and thought-provoking topics. At these gatherings, no subject was off limits, from religion to politics to art. Called by different names in different places, in France such a gathering was called a “salon,” which means, “a conversational gathering.” Today, when people hear the word salon, though, they likely think about their last haircut. However, Phoenix is the home to an organization that hosts modern-day salons. Anyone can join. Spirit of the Senses was created by Thomas Houlon in 1983 when he 30 and going to Arizona State University. He had come back to fi nish an education degree. “I had the idea to create a situation where people could come together for intellectual gatherings, so people who were really talented in different areas would have a chance to meet each other,” Houlon said. “When I started Spirit of the Senses I didn’t know about salons, but a couple of years later someone told me about them and we took the name.” In 1991, Houlon met wife Patty Barnes and they have been running the organization since. The group grew, Houlon said, when he took it out of ASU and into the community. Now there are nearly 300 members; 30 to 40 attending each gathering. People meet in homes or other locations such as Phoenix County Day School. “The members can sign up for up to fi ve every month, and we provide at last a dozen choices,” Barnes said. The membership fee is $300 and a schedule of upcoming salons is provided at the beginning of the month. The average member is 40 to 50 years old, although there are members as young as 30 and older than 70. “We had a member who joined when he was 22,” Barnes said. “Our members are very great listeners and all viewpoints are welcomed and considered.” The salon consists of a presentation, questions-answer session and discussion. Salon topics are diverse. Recently, for instance, Christopher Groppi, an ASU experimental astrophysicist, presented “Astronomy in Antarctica,” while Rob Kaplan, music director for the ASU School of Dance, performed sonic sounds capes and looping compositions through piano, guitar and other technology. Member Dick Malone said he enjoys the inventiveness and informal environment of the group. “It’s extremely refreshing, and we learn a lot,” he said. “And it’s all very intimate. It’s nonthreatening and very welcoming. Page 47 February 2013 “I don’t think people realize the sacri fi ces that soldiers have made for them because they haven’t sent their own kids,” she said. “I think we as a society need to be more aware.” Dahl became involved with the Service through the Red Cross. In 1993, she began to volunteer for the Red Cross as a psych nurse during disasters. “I fi t right in. A disaster is very much like an area of combat,” she said. “It was a chance where I could use the skills I had developed in the Army.” She has served in disasters from Sept. 11 to Hurricane Katrina. “We can’t snap our fi ngers and make things better,” said Brian Gomez, communications specialist with the Grand Canyon Chapter of the American Red Cross. “We need to send volunteers. That is where people like Jeannine come in.” “She legitimately wants to help people,” he said. “I think she realizes that she has a talent and a gift and regardless of how old she is she wants to use it.” Dahl said everyone should serve their community. “I think everyone, down to an elementary school kid, needs to give back to the community. It would help them. It would help everyone.” Dahl said community service can be therapy for the volunteer and a blessing to the recipient. Gomez said, “She has so much energy, you can tell that she’s not slowing down. It really rubs off on others.” Peggy Schwartz has known Dahl for more than 16 years and worked with her on the a mental health team for the Red Cross “I think she’s an excellent role model for elderly people who are bored or lonely,” Schwartz said. “They don’t have to be.” Dahl said there is more to come in life.
