Two years later, Tracy wanted to return to Detroit and re-open the store. Her sister however, convinced her that the neighborhood and store weren’t as she remembered. “My family called Sotheby’s and had everything sold and auctioned off. It broke my heart,” Tracy said. And then two years ago, with the end of her own construction company and her marriage, Tracy was reminded of her longtime dream. She knew the time was now. “I thought, ‘This could work, I think I can do this,’ and I started shopping for the things I would need,” she said. Eighteen months later and a storage unit full of merchandise, Tracy knew she had to either have a really big garage sale or open her store. “I was helping to run a construction company and was looking for a space to open my store. I would drive from job to job and look at every garage sale along the way. I went to vintage sales, estate sales, huge warehouse sales in California,” Tracy said. After researching ice cream for two months and having racks and racks of vintage clothing dry-cleaned, Tracy was on the fast track to ful fi lling her dream. Looking in various Phoenix neighborhoods, nothing seemed right. They were connected to each other’s lives, had block parties and cooked meals when people were ill. It reminded me of another time, when people took care of their neighbor.” She found a location at 40th Street and Thomas Road. Old metal signs were hung, tea-length dresses and plaid coats were hung and the menu for the soda fountain developed. Shakes and malts with names like the Elvis Presley, James Dean and Rat Pack take diners back to a time when a soda fountain was the place to hang. A giant banana split, brownie sundae or ice cream cone (all made with Thrifty ice cream) help round out the menu. Italian sodas, egg creams and phosphates take it all up a notch. If the menu doesn’t take you back to the ‘50s and ‘60s, Tracy, dressed in complete vintage garb each and every day, will take you back to a time almost forgotten.
