Page 38 February 2013 They would eventually raise four daughters in this home. The large pine tree that still brings shade to the backyard was planted in 1943 when the family carried their Christmas tree to the back and instead of throwing it away, planted it in hopes it would grow as their family did. Lester was the city’s fi rst electrical inspector, while Labeula delivered telegrams during WWII to Scottsdale and Salt River Pima Reservation families, informing residents when a family member had been wounded or killed in the war. She was also a founder of the Scottsdale Historical Society. Lester and Labeula loved to do yard work, growing an impressive garden on their own property as well as caring for the grounds of local businesses. A French restaurant just down the street at the present location of the Old Town Tortilla Factory, as well as the Glass Door Restaurant that was across the street, were two areas they cared for after their retirement. The rich history of the home is what brought restaurant proprietor Brain Raab, to the property. Growing up in Orange, Calif., Raab’s mom would fi nd Victorian homes and convince the owners to let her fi x them up, while also allowing her family to live in them for cheap rent. “We grew up in Victorian homes,” Raab said. “The windows, the door knobs, the wallpaper, were all things I was familiar with. “It felt like home.” When Raab and restaurant partner Terry Ellisor looked at the property, they were enamored with the charm. But they weren’t sure it would work for their restaurant. With a tiny kitchen, it would present problems for Chef Matt Carter. They continued to look at properties. “Terry kept saying he couldn’t get the house with the large pine tree out of his head. We knew it was the place, and we were the only ones crazy enough to make it happen,” Raab said. Named The House because of its history and obvious charm, the menu is created with the same idea. “If I went into your home, what would you cook for me,” Raab said. “It would be completely different than your neighbor, or a friend. “Individual cultures, people, etc. would all serve something different. Our menu is a collection of Chef Matt Carter’s favorite meals from around the world. It’s his take on food that people would serve in their homes,” Raab said. House roast turkey, Maine lobster roll, Brussels sprouts, lobster or tomato bisque and Maine lobster fried rice tease you into choosing a “side, salad or sandwich.” My favorite option is the Maine lobster fried rice paired with the Creekstone fi let, shishito peppers, roast corn and balsamic glaze. Enjoyed with a glass of Perrier Jouet Champagne, you will feel like you have truly died and gone to heaven. The kale salad with miso peppercorn dressing or Arizona arugula are both terri fi c ways to warm up your pallet, while Berkshire pork belly, kimchee, udon noodle and fried egg or warm shrimp with roast corn are a sure fi re way to enjoy “shared plates” with a friend or the one you love. Seared diver scallops, roasted Scottish salmon and braised pastrami brisket will entice you to eat with a group, all ordering a separate plate and trying the lot. Who can resist such fl avors, combinations and culinary skill? Not this gal. While the dining room is brilliantly decorated, the patio will take you out of Phoenix and into the most charming backyard you’ve ever seen. Lighted with tea lights, accentuated with dramatic trees and a rustic brick fi replace it’s perfect for a large party, a happy hour group or the most romantic night you’ve had in quite some time. The House is exactly what Old Town Scottsdale needed. It’s a place to be, to love and to feel the comfort of home. The artistry, both in the food and the setting, is something for all to appreciate. Page 39 February 2013 Tracy Mulac Bertie’s offers experience of old-fashioned ice cream By Amanda Goossen Bertie’s of Arcadia is a neighborhood gem. This culmination of dreams, experience and family history have produced a soda fountain, candy store and vintage shop. Local resident Tracy Mulac grew up in her grandmother Roberta’s Detroit store, L&R. Complete with a soda fountain, deli counter, clothing, alcohol and even two gas pumps out front, it was the neighborhood store and Tracy has vivid memories. “My grandmother was a tough woman. But she also taught me so much,” Tracy said. “We spent summers in her shop, she taught me a little about food but mostly about merchandising. She taught me to move things around and keep the space fresh.” Grandma Roberta was well trained on how to run a store. “My grandma’s mother, Martha Ann, owned a shop. Then my grandparent’s Roberta and Lucadio owned a store called The Silica in Ohio before and after the war. They had the store for 26 years and were the go-to store for the small town,” Tracy said. In 1963 Lucadio and Roberta moved to Detroit where they opened L&R. “My grandmother was a real character. She and her best friend Hilda were like Thelma and Louise. She would say she was going to church and then we’d see her outside hooking up her boat and grabbing a six-pack,” Tracy said. “I always said ‘I want to go to church with Grandma Bertie.’” Roberta, or Bertie to the ones she knew and loved, owned and operated L&R until the mid-1970s, when the world and neighborhood began to change. “The city came through and told her she Continued on page 40 Let us help you FIT into your MEDICALLY SUPERVISED WEIGHT LOSS LOSE UP TO 20-30 LBS.
