Page 22 February 2013 Southeast Asia as a playground By Kaley Kalil Casey Schiller, 27, recently traveled for six months through eight countries with the intention of learning something not just about the places he would travel to, but about himself. From May to November, Southeast Asia was Schiller’s playground. “The desire to travel and experience unfamiliar cultures and environments was the main inspiration,” he said. While abroad, Schiller enjoyed activities such as scuba diving and motor biking. “We rode through secluded mountains, lush pastures, giant waterfalls, and went from town to town,” he said. He received his diving certi fi cation on Thailand’s island of Ko Tao and did some more diving off the coast of Gili Trawangan in Indonesia. Schiller said his favorite destination was Ubud, Bali. “I fell in love with the Gamelan Orchestra and tried to get a few performances with my hand-held recorder,” he said.
