Page 18 January 2013 Association regroups its efforts By Kyle Renick The Arcadia Osborn Neighborhood Association is revitalizing after more than a decade-long hiatus. Originally formed in 1998, the organization, which held its fi rst meeting on Nov. 28 since reforming, is a group of volunteers from the Arcadia area who work to bene fi t their neighborhood. The November meeting was used as a time for residents to vote for AONA of fi cers, resulting in the election of Jay Swartz as president, John Schneeman as vice president, Chuck Saillant as treasurer and six other board members. Neighbors decided to regroup after last year, when a part of the R&G (Republic & Gazette) Ranch on the corner of 48th Street and Indian School Road was to be redeveloped into a three-story of fi ce building, something that was “not congruent to the rest of the neighborhood,” said Neal Haddad, AONA liaison to the city of Phoenix and a 15-year Arcadia resident. “A few of us banded together and were able to come to a compromise with the city,” Haddad said. The group negotiated the size of the building to a smaller two-story building, something more similar to its surroundings. The group’s main goal now is to relay important quality-of-life information to residents, including details about zoning, crime and city services. “Problems can develop quickly and we want to be able to communicate quickly,” Haddad said, noting a lack of problems in the area was the group’s original reason for dissolving more than 10 years ago. Now, the group wants to focus mostly on keeping its residents informed. Valerie Demetros, a 12-year resident of Arcadia who attended AONA’s meeting, said she is hopeful for what the group can do for the neighborhood. Continued on page 20 Exceeding Your Expectations!
