A simple way to distinguish between these two categories is to remember that fi rst-party insurance applies when you are harmed and third-party insurance applies when you are accused of harming someone else. Your insurance review should start with an analysis of the things you want to protect (such as real estate and personal property) as well as the risks you want to protect against (medical bills, lawsuits arising from car accidents or speci fi c types of business activities, etc.). The next step is to analyze how much coverage, in monetary terms, you think you will need. On the fi rst-party side, you should value your property (both its present value and how much it would cost to replace). Analyzing the amount of coverage for third-party insurance is a little trickier because it’s hard to foresee how much injury you might be accused of causing another person or company. At this point, it’s helpful to talk to your insurance agent or broker about what is covered under your current policies and whether they are suf fi cient to provide the protection you desire. Remember, everyone has different levels of risk tolerance – some prefer to pay more for additional piece of mind and others hate the idea of overpaying for insurance they may never need. The goal is to fi nd the right amount of insurance for your needs and comfort level. Finally, insurance isn’t perfect and may not cover every loss or claim. But if you take the opportunity to review your coverage now, you can be better prepared for what the future may bring and minimize surprises regarding what is and is not covered by your insurance policies.
