Hagerstown and its surroundings are rich with Civil War history, with Gettysburg located 35 miles northeast and the small town of Sharpsburg situated 6 miles to the south. “Sharpsburg lies on the Potomac, and was the scene of the bloodiest battle of the entire Civil War,” Wilson said. “It is often called the battle of Antietam, and history records 23,000 men killed or wounded on September 17, 1862. Every 25 years, the Antietam Battle is acknowledged by reenactments or demonstrations.” The Wilsons have attended the 75th, 100th and the 125th anniversaries of this one-day battle. They chose its 150th anniversary for the men in their family to meet up and spend four days together. “I was very young, about age three (when I attended the 75th anniversary), but remember it because Dick cut his leg on some brush, and we were treated to a visit to the ¿ eld hospital where they made a big deal out of ¿ xing him up,” Wilson said. For the recent 150th anniversary, they all À ew in to Baltimore/Washington International Airport, grouped up, and rented two cars for the traveling. They toured the battle scene with thousands of other people and enjoyed displays, speeches and demonstrations. “And, of course, we enjoyed each other by visiting old haunts, such as where Dick and I grew up,” Wilson said. “We ate Maryland crab cakes non- existent in Arizona, burgers, dogs and even a good nutritious meal periodically.” They also passed by Camp David, the of ¿ cial presidential retreat in the Catoctin National Forest. “As we get older, I realize the signi ¿ cance of the Civil War in reuniting the country and getting rid of the terrible vice of slavery,” Wilson said. “The human losses were immense, but the nation was eventually remolded into unity. History is such a good teacher, and we often repeat ourselves with poor judgment instead of bene ¿ ting from history’s lessons.” The Wilson family is planning to reunite again soon, but have not yet selected a meeting spot.
