Every year I seem to mutter the same thing. Once we hit Halloween, it’s a blurry toboggan ride to Valentine’s Day, followed by a bullet train to Memorial Day, then an oil tanker cruise to Labor Day, and fi nally, a Saigon rickshaw run back to October. I’m learning that as one ages, time goes by quicker. Why? One theory is because as we get older we aren’t doing as many new things, so we’re learning less. We’re doing more repetitive tasks and when we’re doing the same thing over and over, the brain just doesn’t record it. Ever drive to work and then realize you have no memory of the trip? There you go: that’s your brain helping you out, saving space for more important things, like memorization of Superbowl scores and Cy Young Award winners. With that said, I’m letting you know, dear readers, that I’m going to be away for a little while. It’s time for a break. I’m going to take a sabbatical through July 2013, which is when my book, The History of Arcadia is due at the printer. We’ll assess the resurrection of this column then or it may morph into something else. We’ll run the “Best Of” pieces in this space each month and maybe some guest columnists, I don’t know. It’s been a good 15 year run with over 175 Straight Up columns. We should be able to fi nd a few funny ones. I’ll still be here at the paper, hopefully doing new things in addition to all those things my brain refuses to record. This column started as a dream idea when I turned 30. Scared that I was getting stuck in a rut, I changed careers and >poof< became a writer. The former owners of this paper were kind enough to give this kid a chance and I’ll be forever grateful for that. Time is fl ying too fast now, though, so I’ll catch you all on the toboggan next August. Greg can always be reached via e-mail at the paper: greg@arcadianews.com.
