Page 6 November 2012 Dr. Kristin Shealey Tips to stay healthy for fl u season By Kristin Shealey, M.D. Each year, the onset of our beautiful fall weather brings an unwelcome guest: fl u season. It’s important to be informed about the in fl uenza virus so you can stay healthy throughout the fall and winter months, which is when fl u season typically peaks. An ounce of prevention While there’s no guarantee you can avoid the fl u altogether, there are some things you can do to help decrease your chances of contracting it. First and foremost, get immunized. The fl u vaccine is widely available and can be found everywhere from your doctor’s of fi ce to the corner drugstore. Most of us can’t avoid going to the grocery store and other public places, but we can help control the spread of germs through frequent hand washing. If you’re already feeling sick, stay home so you can minimize your contact with others. If you need to cough or sneeze, do so into a tissue, if possible. Also, avoid sharing beverages. You’ve got the fl u. Now what? While a run-of-the mill cold may come on gradually, in fl uenza is characterized by a sudden high fever, chills, body aches, a cough and a runny nose and can last a week or more. It is the nature of the holiday and that’s okay. Every once in a while you should allow yourself a chance to enjoy and cheat a little. But 7500 calories might be taking it a little too far, don’t you think? That’s equivalent to three days worth of proper nutrition. Wouldn’t you rather enter the holiday season feeling ‘ahead of the game’ instead of behind the proverbial 8 ball? Follow my 7 step plan to ensure that you enjoy your day: 1. Wednesday night: Eat clean and no cheating. 2. Thursday morning: Get in a good workout and a healthy breakfast. 3. Thursday afternoon: Help prepare the meal and make good choices by not noshing on too many appetizers. 4. Thursday evening: Eat whatever you want and enjoy it all, in moderation. 5. After dinner: Go on a short 20 minute walk with family and enjoy their company. 6. Enjoy dessert (in moderation) by having a few forkfuls of a few of your favorite (s). 7. Friday: Back on the program. There you have it. Simple, easy to do and you still get to have everything you want on a great holiday spent with family and friends. And if step seven means that you need to Ű nd a program to get back on, come on by and let us give you a complimentary introduction to Results Only. The only thing you have to lose is unwanted holiday calories. Average Thanksgiving Day Meal = 7500 calories Listen to what our clients say about our program...
