Without it, it’s all for naught.” As a great daily snack, especially after a workout, Hitzhusen makes No-Bake Recovery Bars. “There are many advantages to these bars. The oats are a terri fi c source of complex carbohydrates. The whey protein, the even mix of micro-nutrients and the fact that they only contain 225 calories. They are a great choice for anyone,” Hitzhusen said. project since Omei bought it in June. She has removed the stage and made space for local artists to sell their goods, as well as redesigned the menu to offer breakfast, lunch and a selection of pastries. The black cherry scone, bear claw and morning muf fi n are worth trying more than once. The sandwiches, such as the Pilgrim, which combines Swiss cheese, cranberry sauce and turkey breast and can be served as a wrap, Panini or sandwich are beyond delicious. The coffee at Terra Java is brewed in half batches to guarantee freshness, and if requested can be done with a French press or as a pour over. For Omei, special-effects artist (she has an Oscar for her work in a little movie called Titanic ) and chef, Terra Java is a dream realized. Royal at the Biltmore 2502 E. Camelback Road In 2011, after fi ve years of learning everything he could about roasting coffee, Hayes McNeil, decided it was time to open his own coffee bar. “I learned to roast coffee from my friends. Coffee is a community like that, we are open to sharing,” Hayes said. Royal at the Biltmore is a small shop, with a smart sense of style and a modern feel. The coffee bar serves a select few specialty drinks, as well as individual cups of coffee brewed as you order. This pour-over technique is superb because it guarantees freshness, something I always wonder about when I order a cup of coffee at 2 p.m. and it’s poured from a massive urn. Breakfast pastries are on display at Royal and are delivered every morning from The Cookie Bitch Bakery, which supports local purveyors, using Superstition Farms eggs and Hayden Flour Mills fl our. Echo Coffee 2902 N. 68th St. Tucked away and easy to miss, Echo Coffee must be placed on your permanent radar. When I fell upon this hidden treasure I was stunned at the community that gathered, the coffee brewed to order and the delectable treats made in house every day. Echo Coffee serves fresh, organic products. To minimize waste they brew individual cups of Joe, choosing to bypass large pots to serve the freshest product possible. The baristas are topnotch, friendly and educated. The specialty drinks are such a treat you will feel you’ve arrived in a fancy café, far from the Phoenix desert. You are made to feel welcome, important and that your cup of coffee is their most important task of the day. Plus, their cookies happen to be delicious. Fall signals the beginning of holidays, which are often enchanting and memorable, sometimes overwhelming and exhausting. To me, reading a good book has always been a great escape, devoting myself to someone else’s world for a very brief bit of time. This month’s book club choice is a memoir, fairly short and a completely different type of book from what I usually choose. Bloom by Kelle Hampton reminds us of love, family and the tie that binds. It’s a breathtaking peak into one women’s experience and I promise it will completely take you in. It’s perfect for this time of year. The Arcadia News Book Club will meet 6 p.m. Oct. 25 at Terra Java, 3619 E. Indian School Road. We will Skype with author Kelle Hampton and enjoy appetizers as well as a selection of coffee, tea and dessert. We also will include our raf fl e, which has been a huge hit. Each gift basket is worth hundreds of dollars and the money collected from the $5 raf fl e tickets goes to the Arizona Institute for Breast Health. If you haven’t made it to the Arcadia News Book Club in the past, you must try it now. We have established a great group that is ever growing. OCTOBER BOOK CLUB SELECTION BLOOM: FINDING BEAUTY IN THE UNEXPECTED By Kelle Hampton Never in my life have I read a book with so much raw, honest emotion. I sobbed through multiple pages, feeling her pain, seeing the love, and understanding her fears. Bloom by Kelle Hampton is superb, not only because of what she went through, but because she can peel away the layer of shame and insecurity and be honest about every detail. Kelle is a mother of two girls. Those two beautiful girls fi ll her heart and soul, ful fi lling her life like she never thought possible. Yet the day her youngest daughter was born, she was devastated and assumed her dreams would be forever shattered. The moment her daughter Nella was born she was the fi rst to notice, Nella had Down Syndrome. Bloom takes readers on the emotional roller coaster that would become the next few days, weeks and months of the Hampton’s life. Kelle goes through every detail, showing how she felt, how she coped and how she eventually was, months later, disappointed in herself. Heart wrenching, yet beautiful, Bloom is masterfully written. An absolute must read for every mother, daughter, or friend.
