Page 28 October 2012 Flying during holidays can be made a little bit easier By Kaley Kalil With the holidays coming up fast, many people will be making travel plans and booking fl ights to visit friends and relatives. We all know how crazy (and expensive) the holiday season can be, full of crowded airports, bustling parking lots and long lines. This winter, make the holiday haste work to your advantage. Here are a few tips for turning overbooked fl ights and crazed Christmas shopping into stress-free savings for you and your family: Get bumped The holiday season is the most traveled couple of months of the year. The season also carries with it some serious weather conditions, which can put airline carriers behind schedule, sometimes for days. This combination of overbooked, delayed and canceled fl ights can be a great opportunity for you to make some cash and/or earn travel vouchers by getting bumped from your fl ight. U.S. airlines purposely overbook fl ights to account for no-show passengers. To increase your chances of getting bumped, make ticket reservations for heavily traveled days on fl ights that are nearly full, and on smaller aircraft when possible. Put your name (and the name of anyone traveling with you) on the bump list as soon as you arrive at the gate. It’s important to do this as soon as possible so your name will be at the top of the list. When you volunteer, ask the airline’s gate attendant what the chances are of you being bumped. He or she should be able to tell you if the fl ight looks as if it will be overbooked and how many, if any, names are on the bump list ahead of you. Voluntarily getting bumped is basically a deal you agree to with the gate attendant, so be nice, be friendly and negotiate. Power in numbers Stretch your gift budget this Christmas by purchasing gifts from websites that sell at highly discounted prices when enough people agree to buy. Most of these sites have enough traf fi c by now the deal is always on. Groupon.com, DealChicken. com and LivingSocial.com are three of my favorites. If it’s a gift certi fi cate for a restaurant, event or service you’re gifting, print it out and wrap it up in a box to tuck under the tree.
