Page 12 October 2012 City offers help to small businesses Councilman Sal DiCiccio By Sal DiCiccio If you have a small business in Phoenix, or want to start one, we have some help for you. I have written before about Phoenix adopting a 24-hour turnaround for business creation – turn your plans, walk out with your permit and start operations today, saving six to eight months of delay. Phoenix now ranks as the best in the country to do business by eliminating or reducing red tape and bureaucratic hurdles that most cities impose But wait. We’ve done more. In addition to those new business creation reforms, the city council passed other new and expanding boosts for local businesses. I’ve always been a strong supporter of small local businesses. Help me help you. My district of fi ce will help you walk through them. Instead of you coming to us, we will come to you. For contracts of $50,000 or less, small business will get top priority when the city is looking to buy products and service. Now, our local businesses sign up with the city, listing what they sell or do and those businesses are automatically noti fi ed. This eliminates a cumbersome process requiring checking dense city documents for Requests For Proposals (RFPs). My of fi ce has been walking door to door to local businesses in Arcadia explaining these programs. I will even help with the form and hand deliver it for you, and make sure you get on the list. If you want to sell goods or services to the city, please call my of fi ce at 602-262-7491 or email me at council.district.6@phoenix. gov, and we’ll come by and get you signed up. You may have seen our signs in local businesses directing people to our of fi ce if they need help with city issues. If you want one of those signs for your business, call us. I was talking to a local merchant who Continued on page 14 Luxurious Assisted Living Home Luxurious Assisted Living Home • Managed By 2004, 2005 & 2007 Shining Star Manager • Internet, Cable & Phone in Each Suite • 24 Hour Care Provided • Centrally Located • Media Room & Beauty Salon • 10 Private Suites with Bathroom • Laundry & Housekeeping Included • Doctor and Nurse Home Visits with Medicare 480.215.5335 azshiningstar.com FALL SPECIAL! Bruns Dear Reader – Last month I started a “history of my working life” column in honor of Labor Day. Earning money from someone other than my parents started when I was eight. If you missed part one in September, head over to our online archive: arcadianewsarchives.com. Now on to Part II: Home & Auto Cleaning + Yard Maintenance (Self Employed) Scottsdale An after-school business during high school, my buddy Kipp and I plastered fl yers around neighborhoods populated with seniors. My fi rst experience with advertising, we used a ladder to put our fl yers up high on light poles so the old folks couldn’t remove them. “Not even with their canes!” we used to laugh. Golf Cart Cleaner & Mechanic (Pima Country Club) Scottsdale A cool job that came with free golf and lessons. Highlight : getting to play a round with member Vincent Furnier, aka Alice Cooper. Lowlight : when a battery exploded in my face, blasting battery acid into my eyes. At the emergency room, a hungover Med student ran distilled water into my wide-open eyes for 90 minutes. It was like water boarding lite . My resignation was received loud and clear when I “ghosted” † a golf cart into the side wall of the snack bar. Golf Cart Cleaner & Mechanic (Continental Country Club) Scottsdale Since these were the days before e-mail, I got this job while the folks at my last job were still cleaning snacks off the fl oor. Landscaper (Gary’s Landscaping Co.) Scottsdale June 26, 1990… Dear Diary: we set a record today for the hottest day in the history of Phoenix! It was 122° and I was outside cutting grass. Remember: stay in school. Sign Maker, Commercial Painter, Woodworker, Shipping and Receiving Clerk (Kroy Sign Systems) Scottsdale My very fi rst job after graduating high school and blindly mailing out resumes to 50+ companies. Figured I would start at the bottom rung of the corporate ladder and climb on up. After a few years I realized I need to stay in school. Vacation Consultant (Club Med) Scottsdale The pay was so low, most of us were malnourished, but management wisely distracted us all with a simple bene fi ts package: hang out with bikini-clad women on white sand beaches in exotic locations all over the world. Highlight : 11 Club Med vacations in a year. Entrepreneur (S&G Travel Consultants) Scottsdale What do you do when you know everything about selling Club Med vacation packages? You open your own agency, of course. After you fi nd a friend (Scott – the ‘S’ in S & G) whose Dad doesn’t mind kicking in $40,000 to get us off the ground. It was a short fl ight and a horrible crash. I was afraid that I wasn’t cut out for entrepreneurship and resigned myself to stay in school to get the best job possible. Insurance Customer Service (Prudential) Scottsdale One can go crazy helping people understand their insurance policies by reading sections of 5000-page manuals for 25 different states (each state’s insurance laws are different). Remember: stay in school. Retail Sales (Laux Sporting Goods) Buffalo NY In Buffalo, the average high during the summer is about 80°. I lived in Buffalo for one glorious summer, chasing a girl. Landscaper (Clarence Nursery Landscaping) Buffalo NY If it’s 80° you might as well work outside instead of a sporting goods store in a stuffy mall packed with a bunch of teenage girls. Construction Gopher (Some Crazy Roofer Guy’s Company) Phoenix Once I moved back to Phoenix I needed quick money to rent a place with the girl I brought with me. Construction was a tough gig. I lasted one day. Data Entry Clerk (M&M Mars) Phoenix Boring work inside an air-conditioned of fi ce. Duties did not include carrying 2500 pounds of plywood from a mammoth stack on the ground up to the 2nd fl oor. Public Area Attendant & Mini-Bar Attendant (Princess Resort) Scottsdale Public Area Attendants clean the property overall, including the public restrooms throughout property. One night – fi ve minutes from the end of my shift – I received a call that a woman was “sick” in the bathroom outside our fi ve-star restaurant. Walking in, I found a woman sitting cross-legged on the fl oor, apologizing profusely in French while her American counterpart soothed her shoulders and translated for me. The woman sobbed and pointed to the sink – a very deep hammered copper sink that was full to the brim with what looked like guacamole soup that had been left out in the sun for a week. “She was sick… in the sink,” the translator said, pausing while the Frenchie yammered away in whispers – obviously feverish. I leaned down a little to get closer to the sick woman’s sweaty ear. “That’s NASTY!” I barked, pointing to the sink like I was scolding a hound. “Nasty!” The translator nodded and said nothing. She didn’t need to. By the time I got back to the of fi ce, my shift was over. Awwww, Continued on page 67
