Page 10 October 2012 DPS out to increase use of seatbelts Justice Steven Sarkis By Steven Sarkis Recently the Arizona Department of Public Safety kicked off its 2012 “Seatbelt Challenge.” The goal of this program is to reduce the number of fatal collisions statewide. July was one of the worst months in many years for fatal collisions investigated by DPS. Out of the 25 fatal crashes that month, 15 of the drivers or occupants killed in these collisions were not wearing seatbelts. Those who drive frequently on the highways and freeways around the Valley might have noticed in recent weeks many of the electronic highway signs are fl ashing reminders regarding seatbelt use. These warnings are part of the DPS challenge but also just a simple reminder to take that extra second to buckle up. The seatbelt use rate in Arizona last year was 82.9 percent, according to the National Highway Traf fi c Safety Administration. At about 83 percent, drivers in Arizona are pretty good about wearing their seatbelts though there is always room for improvement. Individuals frequently come into my court cited for seatbelt violations. Although the fi ne is a mere slap on the wrist, I often try to remind these individuals about the effectiveness of seatbelt use. It has been well documented time and again that wearing a seatbelt greatly reduces the chance of serious injury and even death if you are involved in an accident. To avoid another tragic month like July, in which 15 out of 25 drivers killed in collisions were not wearing seatbelts, let’s all try to remember a very simple measure of safety might potentially save a life.
