Page 35 September 2012 Giving Continued from page 33 it through my cancer journey without Singleton Moms,” Mattingly said. “They cleaned and sterilized my home before each treatment and provided healthy meals that I could easily prepare for Cole on the days that I was too sick to do much.” Mattingly also credited Singleton Moms with helping her keep her home with the fi nancial assistance they provided each month while she was on medical leave from work. “I’m constantly inspired and motivated by Valarie,” Miller said. “You’re giving to them, but they’re giving to you just as much. It’s a two-way street.” Mattingly is now a key volunteer with Singleton Moms. In addition to being on Miller’s care team and cleaning homes, she organizes the Bare Necessities drives every other month. Groups, like Girl Scout troops, churches and SRP, gather donations of paper products, cleaning supplies and toiletries. Mattingly organizes these donations so moms can come grab what they need. “Some of our moms, depending on how sick they are, can’t even get those things,” said Jody Farley-Berens, a founding member and the executive director of Singleton Moms. Women can stay with Singleton Moms as long as they are undergoing treatment, or for up to a year. If services are needed for longer than a year, they are rotated back on to the wait list. The wait time for services is four to fi ve months. “The more help from the community, the more families we can help at one time,” Farley-Berens said. Miller received the Care Coordinator of the Year at last year’s Giving Hands Ball for her dedication to the moms like Mattingly she helps. Mattingly wore that hot pink wig to the ball. Miller said everyone wanted to know who that girl with the pink wig was, and she said, “That’s my girl!” At the Giving Hands Ball, people will hear moms telling their story and gain their perspective on living with cancer. This year’s ball is on Nov. 10 at the Arizona Grand Resort. Tickets are available online until Oct. 15 at www.singletonmoms.org for $100 a seat. “Say your best friend had cancer, what would you do?” Miller said. “What we’re doing is what you’d do for those you care about.” l Garden • Arcadia High • Peo op p p p s o o • St. Theresa • Basketball • Ki id d ds i se e eu ums • Softball • Shemer Art • Ch hr r ri r Vo o o ol lleyball • Neighborhood News • Sp po o or N te e e er rtainment • Ingleside • Football • N N N a en n n nt ts • Squaw Peak • Recreation • Dram m m ma a d Da a an nce • Church News • Hopi • Arc ca a a n l lt t th & Fitness • Arts & Entertainme e en n a s s • Hopi • Football • Desert Botani ic c c ca S a ad d d dia High • People • Phoenix Zoo • S S a as s sketball • Kids • Tavan • Museums s h h er A l w w w Peak • Recreation • Drama • Baseb ba a a hu u ur rch News • H i Buy.
