After you’ve landed, you really should try to stay awake until a late bedtime. This way, you can still sleep a normal amount of hours before waking up with the world around you the next morning. Go outside Once you’ve arrived to your destination, be sure to spend some time outside during the day. The sunlight hitting your body naturally helps to adjust your internal clock to your surroundings. Page 33 September 2012 d e Giving hands help single moms cope with cancer GIVING HANDS BALL Nov. 10, Arizona Grand Resort www.SingletonMoms.org Valarie Mattingly (left) met Tessa Miller through Singleton Moms, a group dedicated to helping single moms who have cancer. By Jennifer Crane When Tessa Miller walked into Valarie Mattingly’s apartment, the fi rst thing she noticed was a hot pink wig in the row of wigs on the other side of the room. “That wig really showed her spirit,” Miller said. “If she had to wear wigs, she was going to wear a pink one.” Mattingly and Miller met through Singleton Moms, a nonpro fi t organization helping single moms with cancer. Miller was Mattingly’s care coordinator during her cancer treatment, offering support and organizing the home cleanings and meals for Mattingly and her son, Cole. Miller, a longtime Arcadia resident, became involved with Singleton Moms in March 2009 when she donated to a fundraising walk. Later that year, she became a co-care coordinator to her fi rst mom, Rossi. “I loved it because we talked and laughed the whole drive,” she said. “It really made a difference to her.” Mattingly heard about Singleton Moms at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and contacted them within the fi rst weeks. She had Miller’s care and support during her fi rst chemo treatment and throughout the rest of the year. Miller said she is nervous the fi rst time she meets any mom. When she meets the family, she doesn’t know much about them. She said they quickly become friends. Mattingly said she was blessed to have Miller as the best support system. “Tessa inspired me to fi nd strength that I didn’t know I had and helped me keep a positive attitude knowing everything was going to be okay,” Mattingly said. As a care coordinator, Miller organizes all the items the families receive, including the monthly full cleaning of the home and meals speci fi c to dietary needs. “I don’t know how I would have made Continued on page 35 Institute, businesses team to fi ght breast cancer By Amanda Goossen Each year more than 4,000 women in Arizona are diagnosed with breast cancer. The Arizona Institute for Breast Health (AIBH) , a nonpro fi t organization focused solely on providing a free second opinion for women diagnosed with breast cancer, has saved lives, eased emotions and given hope in moments of despair. “Since our inception in 1998, we’ve sought to provide education, resources and support to newly diagnosed patients with the help of our volunteer team of physicians and medical professionals whose specialties include breast radiology, breast surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, reconstructive surgery and breast pathology,” said AIBH co-founder Dr. Coral Quiet. She and her volunteer team recently were named a 2012 Arizona Big Media Health Care Leader and a 2012 Phoenix Business Journal Health Care Hero fi nalist. As local businesses in Phoenix and Scottsdale begin to take notice of the work done by the AIBH, many are rallying behind them, helping to raise money and spread the word. Sapporo Scottsdale Presents the 2012 Breast of Scottsdale Bene fi tting AIBH Sapporo Scottsdale, in partnership with Belvedere Vodka, will present the fi rst- ever Breast of Scottsdale 6 p.m. until closing Sept. 12. Donating $25 for an AIBH Pink Light to help light up the Marshall Way Bridge in Scottsdale in the month of October offers free admission to the event. Once inside, guests will be given their own “pink light” glowing ring, have a chance at winning prizes and have their picture taken by the Clique Photo Station. Pink-themed food and drinks will be unveiled on the night of the event and be available throughout October, breast cancer awareness month. A portion of the proceeds for these items will be given to AIBH. Dress up in pink and prizes will be awarded to the most creative, most zany attire. To register for Breast of Scottsdale, visit www.AIBH.org. Remedy Pilates Cardio for the Cure When Kelly Snailum and her sister-in- law Amanda opened Remedy Pilates and Massage Studio in Scottsdale, they knew they wanted to give back to the community. In 2006, Snailum’s father passed away from brain cancer. In 2007, Amanda’s grandmother died from pancreatic cancer. Cancer seemed to be the right place to put their fundraising efforts. The AIBH was introduced to Remedy in January 2009 though Lisa Davis, former AIBH board member and a longtime client of Snailum’s. “When my father had brain cancer, Lisa helped me through it,” Snailum said. “Giving back to the AIBH seemed natural. Breast cancer is an unrelated cancer, but it’s still cancer.” This September Remedy Pilates and Massage Studio will offer four AIBH classes. These classes will cost $25 each and earn participants a “Pink Light” on the bridge. The classes are: 10 a.m. Sept. 23 -- stretch and stamina Noon Sept. 24 -- Pilates mat plus 5:30 p.m. Sept. 25 -- cardio Pilates 9:15 a.m. Sept. 29 -- Zumba Classes work from beginner to advanced exercise enthusiast. For more information, contact Remedy Pilates and Massage at 480-699-8160. Olive & Ivy Partners with Moet, Belvedere Vodka on Pink AIBH Menu Each year when the Marshall Way Bridge in Scottsdale is lighted, the switch is fl ipped at Olive & Ivy restaurant in Old Town. This year the kick-off is Oct. 4, with support continuing throughout the month with a Pink Light Menu. A portion of the proceeds will go to AIBH. Pink Light drinks will include, The Pink Drink Martini made with Belvedere Vodka, Grand Marnier, muddled raspberries, orange juice and lemon juice; Two Long Vodka made with Belvedere Vodka, lemon juice and orange and cranberry bitters; and The Mayan made with apricot brandy, Pisco (Peace-co), Peychaud’s (Pey-shows) bitters, lemon juice and topped with Moët & Chandon. “The money raised stays local for the over 4,000 women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year in Arizona. Olive & Ivy, being a local company, is proud to be a part of that,” said Anita Walker of Olive and Ivy. The Pink Light District, Marshall Way Bridge Members of the Arcadia community and beyond are invited to sponsor a pink light in honor or in memory of a loved one touched by cancer as part of the annual Pink Light District to bene fi t AIBH by visiting www. PinkLightDistrict.org. Each honoree receives a Pink Light Tribute Card, and their name placed in the 2012 Pink Light Honor Album on the AIBH website. Sponsorships of multiple lights and other donation opportunities are available.
