Page 30 September 2012 Mariposa Monarca, a monarch butter fl y exhibit featuring hundreds of live monarch butter fl ies in a beautiful and lush habitat, returns to the Desert Botanical Garden beginning Sept. 29. Guests can view these delicate creatures in the Marshall Butter fl y Pavilion from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through November 25. In the 2,400-square-foot walk-through butter fl y pavilion, visitors learn about the metamorphosis of the monarch life cycle. The exhibit also describes the migration of the butter fl ies and how they know when to depart for the winter, when to stop for food and where the females lay their eggs. Visitors will learn about conservation efforts and how scientists discover certain “migration mysteries” by tagging monarchs to track their migratory patterns. Admission to the Marshall Butter fl y Pavilion is free for members and children under 3. It is $3.50 for the general public with paid Garden admission ($18 for adults, $15 for seniors, $10 for students with ID, $8 for children 3-12 years-of-age). Page 31 September 2012 Hopi dads supply iPads By Raquel Velasco Hopi Elementary students are taking a bite out of a new type of apple this fall. The Apple iPad that is. For several years, the Hopi Dad’s Club has raised money toward implementing various technologies into the elementary school. Those efforts have included funding SmartBoards and projectors and most recently the dads’ energy was placed in bringing Apple tablets into classes. Nann Horton, who teaches fi rst grade at Hopi Elementary, said The Hopi Dad’s Club, in conjunction with the PTA, asked teachers what tools they needed. The answer: iPads. Horton said 180 iPads have been purchased for use in Hopi Elementary classrooms, across all six grades, K-5. “This is by far the largest donation of its kind at Hopi Elementary,” principal Lori Colling said. Six carts, consisting of 30 iPads each, will be available to be checked out by Hopi teachers. “It’s just an incredible gift from the parents of Hopi to help the kids reach that goal of really integrating technology into the daily teaching and learning experience for them,” Colling said. The iPads will allow students to engage in interactive exercises. Some activities will involve such content as “creating their own stories with video and pictures and audio,” Horton said. Other purposes focus on enhancing information evaluation. Horton said one educational application encourages real-time quizzes, in which teachers can test students’ knowledge of certain material. “The kids have to be ready to answer a question based on when their names are pulled up,” she said. “The nice thing about that app is if you connect a parent’s e-mail to that, you can e-mail them (the results) right then and there.” Colling added: “There is such an incredible wealth of apps out there that are going to help teachers ... really improve instruction, so we are thrilled.” Students will stay connected to these applications via the district’s improved infrastructure of wireless Internet access across all schools. Horton said Hopi’s teachers have been trained on how to use the iPads throughout the summer by taking professional development classes offered by the district. “Our kids are tech-savvy, and we’ve seen their excitement when they get technology in their hands,” she said. “As kids grow and evolve, things have to change. Hopi wants to be on the top, and we want to be on the cutting-edge to offer those opportunities for our kids.” 455 N. 3rd Street Phoenix, AZ (Van Buren & 3rd Street) Downtown Phoenix 1130 | STARBUCKS | CAFÉ ROMA SUSHI KOKORO | MY BIG FAT GREEK RESTAURANT CULTURE FRESH BOUTIQUE | NY & CO | BRICK PIZZA-WINE-CHEESE CORNER BAKERY CAFÉ | SAM’S CAFÉ | AMC 24 THEATRES MORIAH II NAILS & SPA ( Opening September) ...and many other great retailers and restaurants Momma’s Organic Market every Thursday starting October 4th from 4-7 pm Religious Instruction • Strong Academics • Religious Instruction • Strong Academics • Cutting Edge Technology Cutting Edge Technology Leadership Programs • PE and Interscholastic Sports • Instrumental and Vocal Music Leadership Programs • PE and Interscholastic Sports • Instrumental and Vocal Music “Arts Attack” Program • School Nurse • Bus Transportation Available “Arts Attack” Program • School Nurse • Bus Transportation Available Offering Spanish to All Grade Levels Looking for a fresh start?
