Arcadian enjoys teaching Chinese preschool class By Kaley Kalil Born and raised in Arcadia, Hana Damore, 24, de fi nitely is a gal with a plan, as well as a sense of adventure. “I have always planned on being a lawyer,” Damore said. “Between law school and college, I knew I wanted to take three years off in order to travel and do things I wouldn’t be able to do once I complete law school.” After graduating from Washington University in 2010, Damore worked a seasonal job in Lake Tahoe for a year to enjoy the area and spend quality time with her family. For her second year off, she knew she wanted to go abroad. “I looked for jobs, found the best one in China, was placed in Nanjing and headed there in August of 2011.” With an urban population of about seven million, Nanjing is one of Eastern China’s largest commercial centers. Damore lived in a 25-story apartment building with three other people – two Germans studying Chinese and one American teaching physics. “It was a great set-up because it made it much easier to meet people and go out in the city,” she said. Damore taught English to preschool students during the week and to adults and older students on afternoons and weekends. “I loved working with the preschool and Continued on page 29 Hello Arcadia. Welcome to the Results Only fitness column. We just moved in at 3627 E. Indian School Road, Ste. 103. Come on by and check out a class at www.resultsonly.com. It’s that time of year again when parents stroll through the aisles of the big box school supply stores, singing and danc- ing as they willingly purchase the nec- essary supplies for their tiny and not so tiny angels as the children begrudgingly start their fall stroll through the halls of education. Yes, the commercial where the dad is riding a shopping cart singing “It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” got it right for many. Others dread the day when summer comes to an end, especially the ones who are under age 16. I HATED to see sum- mer go when I was a kid. (Seriously when did the ‘powers that be’ decide school starts before Labor Day!) Even though it’s Arizona and the ther- mometer is sky-rocketing, kids should be outside in the pool, on bikes tooling around the neighborhood and begging for the BBQs to end so they can run and play flashlight tag. (Can anyone tell me why there aren’t fireflies in AZ? Sorry, I digress.) Besides New Years, back to school is the only other time of year where more people decide to give themselves a fresh start. WHAT IF YOU TOOK A PAGE OUT OF A KID’S PLAYBOOK? Seriously, what if just like the little ones, you head to the store to get a calendar, a shiny pair of new sneakers, a great work- out outfit and start something new? Children walk onto campus and meet their new teachers, get used to waking up early again so they can catch the bus or a ride to school. They begin an organized schedule while Moms and Dads pack lunchboxes and a snack for mid morning slumps. Is your life so different? Whether you are a parent of school age children, or like me the kids are off at col- lege forging ahead with their own lives, the routine is still the same. Even if you haven’t started a family yet or decided it wasn’t your calling in life the concept holds true. BACK TO SCHOOL=BACK TO YOU! It’s the perfect time for a new routine or a fresh start. Let’s paint a picture…. KIDS -Little Johnny and Sally get dropped off at school. They have to go into their classroom, stow away their gear The ‘Most Wonderful Time of the Year’ or Carpe Diem! You Choose. By Bobby Kelly, CPT RESULTS R ADVERTORIAL and listen for the teachers instructions. YOU? You hightail it to Results Only for class, walk in, stow away your gear, and await your trainers instructions for today’s class. KIDS -listen and wonder how they are going to learn all the new things the teacher has in store. YOU? You wonder “How the heck am I going to do that exercise and lift THAT weight?” In both scenarios the teacher/instructor knows you can do it but the individual needs the motivation, instruction, and confidence to succeed. KIDS -After some serious mental exer- cises they go out, play, and run like the wind from swings to the see/saw, to the bball court. YOU? You have 30 seconds to do lunges, then you sprint to the weights for bicep curls, and off to the kettle bells for 1 arm swings. ‘KETTLE BELLS’ you ask? See, you need to learn new things, too. Children need algebra, US history, and science. You don’t know everything about fat loss so you go to experts in fitness to ensure you are doing every thing you can to take off the few pounds you gained eating brats and drinking margaritas this summer. KIDS – Then they are off for that healthy snack you packed- ants on a log (peanut butter and raisins on celery). YOU? A healthy protein shake to get the nourishment you need after an amazing gym workout. It’s really not that different is it? When a child asks “Why do I need to go to school?” The answer is: “You need to get a solid education, so you can make a good life for yourself when you grow up.” When an adult asks “Why do I need to exercise every day?” Answer, “To be- come as healthy as possible to see the little ones grow up to be exactly who you want them to become.” In arguably the greatest education movie ever, DEAD POETS SOCIETY , Robin Williams said it best, CARPE DIEM . Page 29 August 2012 Hana Damore Neighbor Continued from page 28 kindergarten students,” she said. “They’re awesome to teach because their minds are very fl exible. It’s awesome to watch their progress. I really had a blast being with them in the classroom every day. Adults are harder.” Damore’s culinary escapades abroad led her to try some pretty unconventional foods by American standards, including scorpions, beetles, fi sh eyes and frog. “My favorite dish in China is Hot Pot,” she said. “It’s kind of like the Chinese version of fondue. There’s a big bowl in the middle of the table with boiling broth and oil. You order a bunch of vegetables and meat and then throw them in the pot to cook. So good.” Damore found time to visit Beijing’s Great Wall and Nanjing’s Mount Zijin (Purple Mountain), famous for the tomb of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, who is considered to be the “Father of Modern China.” One of Damore’s favorite memories of the year was celebrating the Chinese New Year. “On the one hand, it’s freezing and there are fi reworks going off every two seconds,” she said. “But on the other hand, you’re with your friends all the time because everyone is off work and going out every night. It was a great week.” Damore said she regrets not having traveled around China more during her year. Luckily, she will be returning this fall for six months to study Chinese at Nanjing University. She also will work part time at another preschool. In the following spring, she hopes to visit either New Zealand or South America for a couple of months before fi nally starting law school. “Living in China as an American is awesome,” she said. “People will go out of their way to help and befriend you, and your salary is 10 times what it would be if you were Chinese or any other Asian ethnicity. It wasn’t until I lived in China that I realized just how lucky I was in terms of the education I received and the lifestyle I am allowed.” Traveled lately or know someone who has?
