Reniewicki and Mettler, both 18, each received $500. Bryce McKinney-Wain, English teacher and newspaper and yearbook adviser, nominated the two. “Our teacher Mrs. McKinney-Wain mentioned it to us about a month and a half ago,” Mettler said. “She wasn’t giving it to kids so they could compete, she just approached Peter and I about it.” Reniewicki designed and was in charge of the last school newspaper, and Mettler showcased students’ visual art, creative writing and poems in the Magazine of the year. Arcadia News started the scholarship program in 2005 and has continued to engage with AHS’ well-rounded, well- written and well-edited newspaper, publisher Greg Bruns said. “Being a community newspaper, it’s our responsibility to reach out to improve and report on education, so offering a scholarship to the high school made sense,” Bruns said. Reniewicki and Mettler were involved in a variety of activities. Reniewicki was a part of the track and cross-country team, marching band, Rocket Club, Boy Scouts , National Honor Society and Calculus Club. Mettler was a member of the rowing team and the club Imprints. Both will attend ASU in the fall where Reniewicki will study physics and Mettler will major in environmental studies. Mettler said she plans to transfer to Oregon State after her freshman year with the hope of joining the university’s rowing team. After graduation, she plans to land a job preserving the environment and ecosystem. She said her passion for preserving the environment stems from her dad who took her camping when she was younger. “My main goal is to de fi nitely graduate college and I want to get a job working with the redwood forest in California,” Mettler said. “I’m a big dork about trees.” Mettler said she became interested in journalism in high school after her English teacher her freshman year said she liked her writing and referred her to McKinney- Wain. For Reniewicki, “I see journalism as a hobby rather than a career. I’m de fi nitely a science guy.” Continued on page 22 When I walk into a home I see its full potential.
