Page 26 May 2012 Disabled travelers can ease trip’s dif fi culties By Kaley Kalil Travelers with disabilities, or those who travel as a caregiver for someone with a disability, know all too well how challenging it can be to plan for, travel to, and manage getting around new destinations. Here are some quick tips for disabled travelers: Tips for fl ying When it comes to fl ying the skies, the easiest and most important thing a disabled traveler can do is call ahead. By calling the airline, and not the airport, travelers can inform their airline on exactly what kind of assistance they’ll need getting on and off the plane. Call again to con fi rm your access needs a few days before your trip. If at all possible, plan to fl y during the middle of the week as opposed to over the weekend, as weekend fl ights tend to get overbooked. Travelers will be more comfortable and have a higher chance of fi nding affordable nonstop fl ights. Additionally, under-booked fl ights present greater opportunities for passengers to upgrade seating at reduced prices. Lastly, be sure to arrive early enough at the airport to allow for any eventualities that may arise. You’ll feel less stressed and less rushed. Where to stay Websites like www.hotels.com make searching for accessible hotels much easier. With speci fi c accessibility search features such as “accessible path of travel,” “roll-in shower” and “handicapped parking,” travelers can compare only hotels fi tting their access needs. Have a game plan To ensure your trip is successful, write down exactly what you want to get out of it so that you can plan correctly. How much time do you have for the trip? What do you hope to accomplish and where do you want to go? What sites do you wish to see? How much money are you planning on spending? How much extra assistance do you think you’ll need throughout your travels? By creating a list of activities you hope to accomplish in order of importance, you’ll be less likely to return home disappointed. Continued on page 29 Preschool Summer Camp! Page 27 May 2012 Twist Continued from page 25 flight, and then decided not to show up at the gate until the plane was ready to leave. Why, yes, fl ight attendant so helpful and nice, I will have another free bourbon to celebrate the moron missing from 2A, thank you. So while I’m re-booking the flight and extending my travel plans by seven hours, I start thinking that this ‘late factor issue’ has turned into a full-fledged personality disorder now. It started a few years ago and it hasn’t really improved. Well, that’s what this Atlanta evidence appears to be telling us. Sometimes it feels like my brain has one of those old Frankenstein-era, evil- laboratory electrical throw switches that used to work automatically at the appropriate time. Bzzzzzttt … my body does whatever is necessary to get going and be on time. Now it’s like the switch gets thrown but it doesn’t do anything. Being in the deadline business, you’d think I’d get this. Must be some kind of mental deal. Maybe I’ve been late so many times the switch just doesn’t work anymore. I think I just need to get some of the ‘HANG IN THERE!’ posters and start handing them out to the people who expect me. Greg can be reached via e-mail: greg@arcadianews.com.
