The redesign took more than three-and- a-half years to complete and took its inspiration from the old campus spoke design, Woolsey said. With the new campus, Woolsey said she wanted to retain the spirit and traditions of Arcadia while still creating a contemporary school to accommodate the growing student body. The spoke design, which places all of the classrooms in a circle around a common area, fosters a communal spirit. “You are never alone in a circle,” she said. This community-focused attitude characterizes Woolsey’s administrative style. Whether a con fl ict arises between a student and a teacher or between two students from different walks of life, Woolsey said she tries to give everyone a voice. “I think that we were given two ears and one mouth for a reason,” she said. “I never feel that dialogue is combative.” Woolsey Continued from page 15 In her role as a mediator, Woolsey said she promotes student success as the common goal in any school-related disagreement. “She is an inspirational leader and she inspires loyalty in people,” Mooney said. “People always want to do what is best for Arcadia High School when she is around.” Woolsey actively supports a wide array of clubs, classes and athletics at AHS to help each student express their individuality in a way that compliments the school community as a whole. “Is it good for students?” said CMAS instructor Richard Maxwell. “That seems to be (her) singular concern.” Continued on page 46 Brian A. Page 45 March 2012 ‘Hindsight’ takes snapshot at transformation of Valley By Greg Bruns Arcadia resident Jim Todd recently published a coffee table book titled “Hindsight.” In a span of 200-plus pages, Todd’s photography of “then and now” showcases the development and expansion of the Valley of the Sun – from Anthem to Queen Creek, from Buckeye to Gold Canyon, the view from the sky is sublime. Todd has been taking pictures from the air nearly 35 years, starting at Landis Aerial Surveys in 1978. Once he started his own aerial photography business in 1990, Todd’s Phoenix photo collection started to grow. It included some of the nearly barren, outlying areas like Anthem, Chandler and Gilbert, to name a few. Change is hardly noticeable as we drive or fl y around on a day-to-day basis, Todd writes in the forward of the book. Presented in this format with large, glossy photos covering more than 200 pages, the evolution of real estate and development is astounding. Arcadia and nearby Paradise Valley are represented in a few places, the most notable are: the Royal Palms Resort and Spa grounds on the south side of Camelback are shown in 1994 with the giant swath of its 9-hole golf course taking up a large piece of valuable real estate, fi lled to the brim with homes in 2011. On the north side of Camelback, the Montelucia sprouted up in 2008, and the former home of John Gardiner’s Tennis Ranch that now serves as the grounds for the Sanctuary resort. For those who have lived here a long time, the “memory lane” aspect is fun; new residents can see a 20-year snapshot of how much has gone into the creation of the city they call home.
