Many of her students struggled with algebra as they went on to high school, Penny said. She decided to start tutoring math, something she enjoyed, and built a home business. Her business grew so much her husband created a classroom area for her in their home, where she still teaches a small group of students each day after 3 p.m. Living close to St. Theresa Catholic School and Arcadia High School, Penny said, has allowed her to be in walking distance for many kids. Penny said she understands the need for one-on-one teaching. When she was a child, she had a hip tumor and spent time in a body cast. She was a homebound student, Penny said, and was thankful for the hard work and care by her teachers. He commitment to others goes beyond working with students. In 1970 when her family settled in their Arcadia neighborhood, they missed their extended family during the holidays. Penny decided to start a Christmas block party, hoping to bring together a group of people, especially those without extended families. The fi rst year, two people came, Penny said. Now they have a group of more than 40. People from outside the neighborhood even ask to be invited, Penny said, but the party is strictly for neighbors. “We have friends who are disappointed, but it means a lot to us to keep it just for the neighborhood,” Penny said. Penny said she has always provided the food for the block parties. “Costco is great for this” she said. She said she loves feeding everyone, although in recent years the neighbors have started pitching in and bringing their Orange Chicken 12 pieces of chicken, or 6 large breasts ½ stick butter 4 tbsp. fl our 1 cup chicken broth 6-oz can frozen orange juice 1 can sliced mushrooms orange salt and pepper Salt, pepper and fl our the chicken. For Arcadia Cookbook this month, Penny shares one of her favorite recipes given to her by her father more than 40 years ago – Orange Chicken. After visiting friends in California, her father brought this recipe home after his friends made it for him. He had always enjoyed simple meat and potato meals, but this dish changed his palate. This well-designed place has an attractive patio getting a lot of attention from the road, and frequently looks to be packed with happy patrons. Food offerings include fl atbread pizzas, burgers, a few salads and several different small plates like gnocchi. The real pursuit here is the beer, though, and right now O.H.S.O. is offering nearly 40 different specialty brews. The real beer adventure starts in the future after O.H.S.O. earns federal approval to brew their own. 4900 E. Indian School Road 602-955- 0358. ohsobrewery.com. ENTREPRENEURS Growing up in a strict household with four brothers presented its own challenges, but for area resident and business owner Tim Mullis, fi nding something to do in a small Wisconsin town was dif fi cult. With roughly 10,000 residents, the social offerings and activities are pretty well understood by the time high school is over. So when Mullis was 20, he was grateful when a basketball buddy invited him to a martial arts class. Within the fi rst 15 minutes, Mullis knew the martial arts were going to be a lifetime pursuit – and that he was going to be a black belt instructor. Not long after, Mullis learned about the AKF – the American Kyuki-Do (ki-KEE-d ō ) Foundation – and met a man who would have an enormous impact on his life. Our engineers have worked to address this issue by developing ATTENTION ASSIST, a system designed to alert the driver to the first signs of drowsiness. A steering sensor is coupled to smart software, which establishes a driver profile in the first 20 minutes of driving. If the system identifies erratic steering corrections, it triggers an audible warning and a “Time for a Rest?” message in the instrument cluster.
