By Amanda Goossen Longtime Arcadia residents Jim and Penny Wilson are living the good life. Married in 1957 after meeting in college, they raised three children and now enjoy time with their seven grandkids. Semi- retired, they live in the home they bought in 1970, after they made the long trek West from Hagerstown, Md. “We loved Phoenix immediately,” Penny said. “In the winter we were playing tennis, while our family and friends in Maryland were shoveling snow off their driveway. Moving to Arcadia was the best move we could have made.” Penny bubbles over with excitement, speaking quickly about the food she enjoys, the family she loves, the in-home tutoring business she is incredibly passionate about, and the husband who inspires and encourages her every day. While her children were in school, Penny was working in the classrooms constantly, she said, even volunteering to do the school newsletter. She had earned a degree in early childhood development when she was young, but began her family after teaching only one year and committed herself to being a stay-at-home mom. As her three children got older, Penny Continued on page 42 Italian Restaurant $ 44 Italian Treat! Page 41 March 2012 It’s wine, it’s burgers, no it’s the perfect milkshake By Amanda Goossen Zinburger at 2502 E. Camelback Road is known for its delicious burgers and impeccable wine list, but the hidden gems on the menu are the shakes and fl oats. Take a seat at the bar, a perfect stand-in for a 50’s style soda fountain when needed. The picture window allows patrons to look out and savor a moment of pure relaxation. Zinburger is a happening spot, but not trendy or pretentious. The bartenders are well educated and fun. Look over the shake list and fi nd yourself facing a tough decision, made even more dif fi cult by the addition of a monthly shake fl avor, changing at the fi rst of every month. Made with the highest quality ingredients, each frothy glass is well- crafted. Original fl avors range from a Crème Brulee, Salted Caramel and Strawberry Cheesecake to The Bars of Zin and Banana Fosters. The Bars of Zin contains rich chocolate ice cream made even more delightful with the addition of melted chocolate pieces and praline fl akes. The small bit of crunch from these added ingredients take this shake from being good to out of this world. The Zinburger version of Banana Fosters is special thanks to the caramelized bananas added to creamy vanilla ice cream. The Double Chocolate Mint has both mint and chocolate chips, adding a terri fi c layer of fl avor. Shakes of the month vary from Butter fi nger, gingerbread and S’mores. In March, fi nd a spot at the bar and order up a date and honey shake. Vanilla ice cream, blended with fresh date puree makes every sip unforgettable. Known as nature’s candy, dates are sweet and rich in potassium, iron and high in fi ber. Few things are as satisfying as a decadent dessert with hidden health bene fi ts. Take a sip and remind yourself of the nutrients hiding behind the ice cream and honey. Zinburger fl oats are another tip of the hat to an old-fashion diner or soda fountain. Served in a large, slender glass these fl oats are fi lled to the brim with ice cream and soda pop. The chef does it right, perfectly balancing creamy vanilla ice cream with either root beer (The Black Cow) or orange cream soda (50/50). Whether looking for dessert after a Zinburger meal or searching to indulge in an afternoon treat, fl oats and shakes at this eatery will tame your sweet tooth. Amanda Goossen is searching the Valley for the best sweets to share with Arcadia News readers.
