Visitors will meet the artists, listen to live music, and be provided complimentary refreshments. “It’s different than a gallery showing because you can meet and interact with the artist,” Waters said. The Fine Art in the Garden Outdoor show began as a group of 13 artists who wanted to have a studio-cleanout sale. The event used to take place in residential gardens but moved to the Shemer Art Center more than 20 years ago. “The cast of characters has changed over the years,” Harney said. The variety of artists will each donate one piece of art for a raf fl e. The money from the raf fl e will bene fi t the Shemer Art Center. “We want to get lots of people to come,” Waters said. “It’s a family friendly show for anyone who enjoys looking at art.” Watercolor by Jean Harney. Although scientists are predicting this year’s season to be minimal, spring wild fl owers will be showing an abundance of colors at the Garden’s Harriet K. Maxwell Desert Wild fl ower Trail. Garden horticulturalists spent last fall seeding and irrigating the trail to ensure that annual wild fl owers, including the Penstemon, Desert Lupine and Mexican poppy, will be at peak bloom March and April. The lack of rain in the Valley this winter has made conditions unfavorable for a mass wild fl ower bloom. “We had a nice early rain around Thanksgiving and we got some germinations, but we had a very dry January,” said Kelly Young, assistant agent of horticulture at the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension. In addition to the wild fl ower trail, the Desert Botanical Garden’s Wild fl ower Info Site is collaborating with 21 parks and gardens throughout central and southern Arizona to report on wild fl ower blooms. Among the parks: South Mountain Park and Usery Mountain Park in the Phoenix area, and Picacho Peak State Park in Southern Arizona. Spring wild fl ower blooms depend on rainfall and soil temperature to initiate wild fl ower germination. To have a “landscape” wild fl ower bloom the Sonora Desert needs at least one large rainstorm during the months of October and November while the soil is still Continued on page 33
