Page 44 February 2012 and into the meat of the job.” Then, Lofgren contacted Maxwell in early 2011 to ask if the CMAS program wanted to participate in some aspects of the new album he was working on. “I had to get up, because I fell over,” Maxwell said. Maxwell and Lofgren stayed in touch until Old School neared completion. Then, in mid-October Lofgren began showing up in the classroom periodically to meet the kids and get a feel for the class, Maxwell said. As part of the promotion for Old School , the CMAS students created videos for the songs Dream Big and Miss You Ray with Lofgren. The music video for Miss You Ray allowed the students to help create a story-lined video for a song. The students participated in almost every aspect of the video’s creation, including fi lming, producing and mixing. Lofgren described the video for Dream Big as a “rockumentary” of sorts. Lofgren sings and performs on a number of instruments, including a full-sized harp his wife bought for him. Instead of developing a scripted traditional video for the song, the students documented the work that went into preparing and performing such an eclectic song. The learning experience didn’t stop there. The original plan called for the class to fi lm Lofgren performing Dream Big in the high school’s auditorium. The production occurred prior to a planned CMAS musical performance on Dec. 8. The show, Arcadia High School Presents Songwriters Night, was set to include music by Arcadia students and the band Halocene. Halocene front woman, Addie Nicole, is a CMAS alum. While fi lming on stage for the video, Lofgren suggested that he perform Dream Big and another song for the audience, Maxwell said.
