By Wayne Schutsky The students in Arcadia High School’s CMAS program received a surprising gift last semester when rock n’ roll guitarist Nils Lofgren allowed the class to help him promote his new album, Old School . CMAS, which stands for Contemporary Music and Sound, allows students to study music technology and gain professional music production skills. Lofgren -- known from his days playing with such rock stars as Bruce Springsteen and his E-Street Band and Neil Young -- has been making music professionally since he was 17. In addition to the work he has done with others during the past 40 years, Lofgren is an accomplished solo musician. He fi rst became associated with the CMAS program at Arcadia High School a little less than two years ago through a student’s friend of a friend of a friend, CMAS instructor Richard Maxwell said. The musician, who lives in Scottsdale, ended up coming to Arcadia to do an interview with a student-run program. “He goes way over, above and beyond,” Maxwell said. “You start to feel guilty.” Following the scripted interview, the CMAS students were given a chance to ask questions. He ended up staying much longer than his scheduled 90 minutes. “It reminded me of something I never really lost sight of,” Lofgren said. “The excitement and enthusiasm I have for learning is what got me going.” Not intimidated by his fame, the students asked technical questions related to the musical craft. “I think Nils was surprised by the depth of the questions,” Maxwell said. “Here were these kids at the high school level and they moved right past the celebrity Continued on page 44 Students get to do it all helping Lofgren with music By Wayne Schutsky Arcadia High students set up equipment, instruments and worked the soundboards for professional musician Nils Lofgren at an impromptu rock show at the school late last year. They functioned as a real crew because, for all intents and purposes, they were putting on a real show with a real rock n’ roll star. “They did everything,” Lofgren said. “It was a big adventure.” Lofgren said he treated the students like he would any crew working any show. The crew and the artist have to work together to fi nd what they can do with the tools they have available, he said. Every show provides a new set of surprises and challenges. “I told them that you have to prioritize what you can get done and what you can’t,” Lofgren said. Like any other show, the crew ran into some technical problems, but the students were ef fi cient in correcting the errors and keeping the performance on track, Lofgren said.
