I will never forget that place.” Reed’s dance company also performs in regional events such as the Sedona Film Festival, the Orange Coast Invitational in California and the Choreography Under the Stars Festival in Palm Springs. The company has two major productions a year. 2012 will bring Kick A** Dance Showcase May 3-5 and Lisa Starry’s “A Vampire Tale” in October, both at Phoenix Little Theatre. The company will return to the UK for another production late October. “Dance completes my life,” Reed said. “I am constantly fi nding inspiration in new places and in people. I am very fortunate to have found dance.” Reed has traveled to England, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Italy. She has family in Cologne, Germany. So far, she said France is her favorite country. “Hands down. I love the French culture, and the mussels. Those people really know how to live their lives. Plus, they go to the south of France during the month of July. I am all for that.” In the future, Reed said she hopes to visit Australia. “It’s like the states, but on the other side of the world with a more dramatic landscape,” she said. Eventually, Reed said she would like to go to graduate school for dance and teach at a university. For now, though, she said she is taking one rehearsal at a time and can be found at La Grande Orange, “behind the coffee bar slinging up tasty espresso beverages as a barista.” Neighbor Continued from page 27 Souvenirs: memories, not baggage By Kaley Kalil You never forget to pack your toothbrush and you always bring back souvenirs. What happens, though, to those souvenirs after the vacation has ended and you’re back at home? Do they wind up in a desk drawer or in next year’s garage sale? The purpose of souvenirs is to remember our travels after they’re over, not to get bogged down by them while traveling. I’ve done the whole backpacking thing where I picked up so many souvenirs along the way for people that I had to buy bags Continued on page 29 arcadiadaily.com arcadiadaily.com dŚĞƉĞƌĨĞĐƚƐŽůƵƟŽŶƚŽŬĞĞƉLJŽƵƌŐŽĂů͊ ĞůŝĐŝŽƵƐ͕ŚĞĂůƚŚLJ͕ŶƵƚƌŝƟŽŶĂůůLJƐŽƵŶĚ ƉƌĞƉĂƌĞĚŵĞĂůƐƚŚĂƚĂƌĞĂīŽƌĚĂďůĞĂƚŽŶůLJΨϲ͘ϬϬĞĂĐŚ͘ DĞĂůƐdŽ'Ž is only a ŵŽƵƐĞͲĐůŝĐŬĂǁĂLJ͘KƌĚĞƌĨŽƌĂĚĂLJŽƌŽƌĚĞƌĨŽƌƚŚĞǁĞĞŬ͘:ƵƐƚŚĞĂƚĂŶĚĞĂƚ͊ WŝĐŬƵƉŵĞĂůƐĂƚDĂƌLJǀĂůĞ͕WĂƌĂĚŝƐĞsĂůůĞLJ͕ŽƌWŚŽĞŶŝdžĂƉƟƐƚ,ŽƐƉŝƚĂůƐ͘ View a menu and order at ĂďƌĂnjŽŚĞĂůƚŚ͘ĐŽŵͬŵĞĂůƐƚŽŐŽ or 602-923-5660 Resolution: Start eating healthier! Page 29 February 2012 Travel Tips Continued from page 28 to carry them all. It’s silly, unnecessary, exhausting, and I don’t recommend trying it. Don’t make the same mistakes I did. Here are some tips to help you pick out the perfect keepsake on your next vacation: Bigger is not always better It is, however, usually heavier. And considering the likely fact that you’ll have to drag your newfound treasure around for awhile, you could fi nd yourself cursing at that authentic Korean kimchi pot well before you ever get it home. Not to mention you’ll need to keep your fi ngers crossed that it makes it there unscathed. Remember: The bigger your stuff gets the less room you’ll have in your bag, in the car, on the bus. If you’re traveling by plane, the extra baggage fees they’ll hit you with could cost more than the item itself. If it’s a large souvenir you’ve just got to have, I recommend shipping it home. This way, your newest prized possession will meet you at the door and you won’t have to deal with the stress of lugging it around for the rest of your trip. Think ahead You’ve managed to get along in life just fi ne so far, so are those Dutch wooden clogs really something you can’t live without? And how many magnets can your fridge hold? Before dishing out the dough, I recommend asking yourself what you plan to do with your souvenir-to-be. Will you set it on a bookshelf? Hang it on the wall? Stuff it in the closet, or shove it into a box? If you don’t have a place for it, you may want to put those bills back into your pocket and spend them on a churro down the street. Your taste buds will thank you and so will your closet. Shop around Don’t throw yourself at the fi rst souvenir shop you stumble upon. Wait until you’ve explored the area a bit before pulling out your wallet. You’ll save yourself not only money, but also the disappointment of buying something completely unoriginal and mass-produced in China. Buy local Purchase handmade products and souvenirs from locally owned shops when you can to support the local community. Quite often, you’ll meet some pretty memorable characters and have a more personal experience than in larger stores or chains.
