Page 26 February 2012 Dancer tours Valley and the world Elisa Marie Reed By Kaley Kalil Elisa Marie Reed, 26, has lived in Arcadia for almost 20 years and has been dancing for nine. Reed fi rst began dance lessons at the age of 9 at a local studio. When that studio closed, she took a PE dance class at Arcadia High School for a semester. It wasn’t until she began her studies at Scottsdale Community College, however, that her love for dance really began to blossom. “I had a hip-hop instructor named Angela Rosenkrans and she encouraged me to take a modern dance class,” Reed said. “I wasn’t very interested because I had heard modern was all interpretive dance. You know, ‘Pretend that you are a tree and one with the earth,’ etc. “She fi nally got me to go to one of her classes and I fell in love. I could not believe how physically demanding and expressive it was. I couldn’t stop. “I was bit by the dance bug.” Reed auditioned and was accepted at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. After graduation, she moved to Chicago and danced with the Zephyr Dance Ensemble, then went to Indianapolis to do a work-study program with Dance Kaleidoscope. She returned to Phoenix in mid-2010 and currently performs with Scorpius Dance Theatre and Altitude Aerials, both based out of Phoenix. Page 27 February 2012 Reed’s Scorpius dance company performed in Whitby, England for the Bram Stoker Horror Film Festival this past October. “I really enjoyed dancing for the Brits. I don’t think they knew what was coming at them,” Reed said. “They are normally a ballet, opera and theater kind of crowd.” Reed was able to extend her dance trip abroad traveling to Paris and Amsterdam.
