One of our neighbors unknowingly revealed all the beauty of dog ownership when their canine gracefully launched 11-feet in the air to catch a frisbee. From what I could gather later, nothing else was observed nor discussed aside from what we need to do to get that going on in our home. I was a little surprised when the clichéd fatherly complaints about owning a dog starting coming out of my mouth. Many topics were completely dismissed with a wave of the hand: vet bills, food prices, puppy prevention, exercise requirements, shoe loss, fur in your cereal and many other things I can still hear my father grumbling about when I wanted a dog. At fi rst I thought I was being helpful and realistic, assisting the rest of the family with the necessary “reality check” adults try to get across before this type of decision is made too early. My stance was a bit loose, as I didn’t want to be Bad News Dad, but I also didn’t want to be Lint Roller Guy who shows up at 9 a.m. meetings looking and smelling like he slept in a kennel last night. Anyone who has been in this position knows how delicate this can be when there are two little ones on your spouse’s side: your argument – no matter how strong and true – will not pass the test of tears and incessant, protracted, wavering cries of the word “please” that range from 1-14 syllables, depending on how close they think you are to “buying in.” Not “giving in” – that’s something else entirely. They know they need you to buy-in , otherwise you’re not going to do any of the work and they risk the entire operation being pulled while the pooch is deported. Since the missus was doing all of the research, I was just going about my daily routine, oblivious to how close we were to upheaval. At one point, I rode along for a 30-minute road trip to visit a breeder who had a dozen dogs with all sorts of of fi cial papers and facts about the lineage and ancestry of each pooch. This seemed – to me – a bit silly, as I fi gured we could fi nd 500 loving dogs in shelters within a 2-mile radius of our home. My family decided to call my bet and we brought home an 80-pound Golden Retriever on a “trial basis.” This was not good. My acceptance of the 2-week trial meant I was now “on board” and was being out-hustled by my wife and kids. At this point, I knew I had only two choices left, depending on my desire to win this battle: 1. Pull the “Niki K” – a last-ditch effort to quash anything unwanted, from birthday parties you’d rather not attend to static you may be receiving about pizza toppings you want to order. Named after Nikita Khrushchev – a Soviet leader who ruled during the Cold War – this maneuver mimics his shoe-banging incident that allegedly occurred during the UN General Assembly Continued on page 24

These are two things that Sherlock Holmes is not. Throughout the movie, the reputations of the actor and the character clash in an everlasting battle. Sadly, it looks as though Sherlock’s character was pushed to the background for most of the movie. In short, this is a Robert Downey Jr. movie in which he’s called the same name as a famous, fi ctional genius. Mycroft is interesting, to say the least. Supposedly much more successful and fi nancially better off than Sherlock, he’s still rather the oddball and has the tendency to wander his house naked. This awkward sibling of Sherlock’s was portrayed in a humorous and likable way, and more interaction between the two brothers would have improved the movie. On the other side of the moral compass, Jared Harris is rather good as Professor Moriarty. However, the question has to be asked: if Moriarty’s such a genius that his intelligence rivals that of Sherlock’s, why does he still lay out his entire plan before his nemesis? It’s as though every bad guy since the beginning of time has had this compulsion to show their genius, despite the obvious fact that telling someone your master plan will only give them the chance to think of a way to stop it. The best and most Sherlock-esque scenes occurred when Moriarty and Sherlock went head-to-head in a battle of wits. This was illustrated through a chess game, each taking their turn in verbal combat. All in all, it was entertaining and exciting; just don’t go expecting to see Sherlock Holmes. I give it 3 stars, and will now proceed to immerse myself in Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories. Since I’d rather not live in my own cold war, I went with the second option. Now, a few months and many hours of research and family discussions later, we have a new addition to our family. Bella is a sweet little Australian Shepherd that was abandoned at a truck stop and subsequently dropped off at a rescue shelter. She was the third or fourth canine we went to see and since she is a rescue dog that didn’t have a $2000 price tag, it was an easy choice based on laws of attraction. Like any loving relationship there’s work to be done. Now I understand why fathers are always carrying on about responsibility and pet ownership: it’s so we don’t have to clean up all the doggie ho-hos littering the yard.
