Page 8 December 2011 This month’s report from Judge Sarkis For many, the holiday season gives us the opportunity to spend more time with our friends and families. Unfortunately, each year the holiday season also brings a fl ood of alcohol- related driving incidents. This year, it is estimated by the U.S. Department of Transportation that 1,200 people will lose their lives during the holiday season as a result of alcohol- related traf fi c accidents. The transportation department also reported that from 2001 to 2005, an average of 45 people died each day during the holiday season, with the largest number of drunk-driving fatalities occurring during Thanksgiving. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), deaths from drinking and driving rise signi fi cantly around the holidays, with alcohol being blamed for about 52 percent of fatal collisions on Christmas and 57 percent on New Year’s, compared to a rate of 41 percent for the entire year. The good news, according to the National Highway Traf fi c Safety Administration, is that there has been a steady decline in the rate of alcohol-related deaths on the nation’s highways during the holidays. Statistics gathered by the traf fi c-safety administration show that during the holiday season in 1982, there were more than 2,600 deaths due to drinking and driving – accounting for 60 percent of all accident fatalities. Holiday seasons in recent years, however, have witnessed about 1,200 fatalities, or roughly 40 percent. The purpose of this month’s article is certainly not to discourage people from enjoying this great time of year and attending holiday gatherings. Spending time with family and friends is what the holiday season is all about. The purpose is simply to encourage safer decision making. I won’t spend time going over the DUI laws in Arizona. Simply put, they are tough. The Arcadia Biltmore Justice Court, as well as all the court systems and police/ fi re departments throughout Arizona, would like to encourage you to use any of our great modes of transportation, whether it is the bus system, light rail, or taxicab. These simple and cheap modes of transportation not only will save you money, when compared to the potential of facing a DUI charge, but potentially save lives. Be safe and enjoy the holidays.
