Barry, and Shoshannah Stern The Hammer is based on the true story of Matt Hamill (Harvard), who was born deaf into a hearing family and enrolled in a local hearing school rather than being taught American Sign Language and put in a deaf school. He struggled with bullies but pulled through by learning to speak and lip-read. However, he was still an outcast. He got into wrestling at a young age, and pursued it all the way through high school. But once he hit college, things got too dif fi cult to push through without knowing any sign language. Transferring to the Rochester Institute of Technology, he found himself an outcast even among the Deaf Community. Determined to achieve his goal of becoming a wrestling champion, he grew into the Deaf Community as he learned sign language and became the fi rst deaf wrestler to win a national collegiate championship. This movie offers good insight into the Deaf Community and being deaf for those who don’t know much about it, but it’s not the best. It is, however, entertaining until the last. The story is inspiring, the writing is good, but the movie seems to follow the usual clichés. Despite having the usual underdog- rising formula, however, the movie seems to come to life, which makes it easier to ignore all the cheesy lines, even enjoy them. The best parts of the movie are its actors. Harvard is moving as Matt Hamill and Barry is probably the most believable as Hamill’s tough but loving grandfather. Stern is great as Kristi, Hamill’s love interest. However, she does bring up some dispute.
