Page 56 October 2011 Type 1 diabetes is often diagnosed in children or young adults. With Type 1 diabetes, a person’s body produces little to no insulin, which is the hormone that regulates carbohydrate metabolism. To treat Type 1, patients often take injections, or shots, of insulin to maintain blood sugar. Another way to get the insulin a patient needs is by a pump. “It’s a miniature IV drip,” Birmingham said. “He gets insulin 24/7. If he didn’t have insulin, he’d die.” Birmingham said her son can do whatever he wants now; his diabetes is much better than it used to be. “One thing I’m thankful for is that he got it at a young age. He’s not going to know life without diabetes.” This is the family’s third year participating in the walk, and they have their own team, Max’s Heroes. For the second year, the local foundation, which is based in Arcadia, is sponsoring walks at two locations, Tempe and Glendale. Walk organizers hope to attract 22,000 people. “Our goal is to raise $1.3 million,” said Sarah Grogger, of the Desert Southwest Chapter. “Last year, we raised $1 million and had 21,000 walkers between our two locations.” The Birmingham family has planned a fundraiser to raise money for their team’s efforts. From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 22, people are invited to come to Moments Salon for a shopping spree. There will be different vendors donating part of their proceeds to the foundation. “It’s a win-win,” Birmingham said. “We’re raising money for diabetes and people can shop.” Moments Salon is at the northeast corner of 44 th Street and Camelback Road. Paula Moyes, the owner of the salon, said she has hosted many charity events during the past 22 years. “I love to house events,” she said. “We’re in the neighborhood and we have a big enough venue.” For more information head online to: jdrf.org/index.cfm. What’s ahead? 2011 GLK350 What’s a Domestic Partnership Agreement? Domestic Partners is a term used today to refer to people who live together but who are not married. Today, many older adults live with a brother or a sister, and they would be con- sidered Domestic Partners. Domestic Partners also include same sex couples or nonmarried, heterosexual couples. Domestic Partners usually are very close to each other and know the wishes of the other. A Domestic Partnership Agree- ment or Property Agreement can set out the partners’ desires about shared living expenses, property ownership and estate planning. Without a Domestic Partner Agreement, family members may get involved and try to prevent a partner from living in the other’s home or using assets as the partners had desired. The Domestic Partner Agreement can put both part- ners at ease that their agreement to share expenses and care for each other is binding. Domestic Partners can also confer legal rights on each other with powers of attorney for finances and health.
