Page 26 October 2011 After their Boston initiation, the Schlenker family moved to the Jiminy Peak Ski Resort in the Berkshires for hiking, kayaking, fi shing and other ventures that kept them happily busy for a week. “The area around us was beautiful,” Grace, 9, said. “There were trees and little streams running through with frogs in them. I loved catching the lightning bugs. It was funny because we had been looking for places to fi nd them and they had been outside our cabin the whole time.” Brent and Linda, who hike Squaw Peak Mountain regularly, enjoyed hiking to the top of the ski resort mountain. The family hiked together in the forest. “We would be hiking and then come across a pond with a beaver damn, an old stone bridge, or other surprises,” Linda said. They visited the Norman Rockwell Museum, participated in an aerial ropes course and rode the summer alpine slide. “The alpine slide was so much fun,” Matthew said. “We took a chair lift up to the top of the mountain. Then, we got in a cart that we rode all the way down the mountain on the slide. They had two tracks, so we could race each other, which was a blast. The slides went so fast.” The family’s vacation wound down with a week on Cape Cod’s beaches and a ferry ride to Nantucket. They stayed in a condo near Hyannis where the kids swam in the ocean, hunted for shells, caught some crabs and went boogie boarding. “We went on really long bike rides and saw the lighthouses and people clam digging,” Linda said. “It was great for the kids to see how different the beaches are there compared to California.” Emma goes to Arcadia High School, Matthew attends Valley Classical Christian and Grace goes to Archway Classical Academy-Veritas. (The family was featured in October in a story about school options). Kaley Kalil, who turns 25 this month, is a traveler from Arcadia who has lived in and traveled to roughly 30 countries.
