Page 8 September 2011 Dr. Kristin Shealey Heartburn troublesome to 60 million By Kristin Shealey, M.D. If you experience a burning sensation after eating, you are not alone. More than 60 million Americans experience heartburn each month, according to the American Gastroenterological Association. Other symptoms include chest pain, burning in the throat, dif fi culty swallowing, a taste of “acid” in your mouth and/or a feeling of food “sticking” in your throat. Heartburn often feels worse after a large meal or if a person lies down after a meal. The good news is that you don’t have to live with heartburn. Acid re fl ux causes the symptoms of heartburn as stomach acid pushes out of the stomach and into the lower esophagus. The esophagus does not have the same protective lining as the stomach, and the irritation you feel is heartburn. Start with these tips to avoid heartburn: Eat smaller meals instead of larger meals. Do not eat late at night. Do not lie down after meals. Raise the head of your bed. Pillows aren’t good enough, but cinder blocks under the mattress will raise it about 30 degrees. Lose weight if you are obese. Extra fat pushing on your stomach can make symptoms worse. Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen as both can irritate the stomach lining. For some people, spicy foods or fatty foods may cause symptoms. Avoid foods that seem to make heartburn worse. If symptoms do not subside, try an over-the-counter medicine designed to neutralize acid in your stomach such as Prilosec or Zantac (or a generic equivalent) and carefully follow the directions on the packaging.
