Bruns [ Part 2 of 2 from August, 2011 ] The last we left our Honda-napping saga, the missus and I discovered our stolen kid taxi after we spent an evening doing some internet detective work. The police arrived at the site of our abandoned vehicle, which was the last known address of our meth-head thief, and were curious why I seemed to know so much. I shared the mugshots we pulled off the web, along with the apartment number of the dude, whose front door was less then 100 feet from where our now-ruined SUV was sitting. The complex is right around the corner from my of fi ce, and I have since discovered this loser frequents some of our neighborhood restaurants and bars. I know his name, address, date of birth, and felony record, which should include an additional charge for Grand Theft Auto. I get it. I really do. When it comes to law enforcement in the nation’s 6th largest city, where budgets have been cut and of fi cers have to handle larger areas with less resources and support, it’s unlikely that we’re going to get of fi cers to jump onboard our homemade detective bandwagon. The Phoenix PD has been understanding, and well-meaning, but at the same time, apologetic, knowing there’s not much they can do when murder or violence isn’t part of the auto theft equation. My imagination runs rampant, though, and I have my own ideas of how to manage this situation, of course: On a dark, early morning in Central Phoenix, not far from the Arcadia News corporate of fi ce, half a dozen black Chevy Tahoes, completely out fi tted with the ominous blacked-out look so familiar with “Spec Ops” vehicles, pull up simultaneously at the residence and engage . 36 men out fi tted in black nomex gear complete with eye-revealing-only- balaclavas, spill out of the vehicles in four seconds. In tactical formation, they quietly ready themselves to breach the suspect’s apartment complex. Red Leader stacks his team with a series of instructional hand signals, backs pressed against a long, brick landscaping wall that runs the perimeter of the building. Inside the thief’s apartment, a handful of tweakers are sprawled out on the fl oor, up for three days watching Barnaby Jones: The Lost Episodes. The initial six M84 fl ashbang grenades crash through the front window of the abode somersault and whirl wildly, pinging off a few junkie craniums. The black canisters spin like tantalizing tops as the inner mix of aluminum, magnesium and ammonium perchlorate blend together to create a cacophonous blast that instantly blows the glass and curtains out of every Continued on page 25

Instant tinnitus has confused each escapee, making short work of the zip-ties, which get elbows rubbing in the middle of each prisoner’s back. Red Leader snaps his right hand through a series of silent gestures that each group responds to, seeking hard cover in less than three seconds. The spent shells, fi red from an AC-130H Spectre gunship in a half-mile wide pylon turn 3000 feet off the hard deck, tumble to the ground. Like oil drums kicked out of the door of a Sikorsky troop carrier, some shells clang and bang noisily, digging out fragments of asphalt, while others pulverize nearby automobiles, arousing half a dozen car alarms in the vicinity. The blaring anti-theft devices are methodically extinguished with heavy, punctuated thuds from a barrage of .50 caliber rounds traveling at 3200 feet-per- second, fi red from two snipers armed with Barrett M107 bolt-action sniper ri fl es, bunkered in positions on the 25th fl oor of a skyscraper just over a mile away. At the same moment the last high velocity round zings by with a high- pitched howl straight into the engine block of a Chevy Malibu, the entire vehicle is blasted to sparky ribbons by a hell fi re of 20mm uranium-tipped rounds, fi red from the twin-mounted M61 Vulcan cannons from the gunship overhead. The chaos of the pummeling fragmentation of the Malibu lasts for 60 seconds, during which some six thousand rounds are expelled. The smoldering wreckage pops and hisses, looking like an abandoned camp fi re. The AC-130 gunner’s radio channel crackles for a moment as a status update is delivered: “Suspect’s vehicle is a con fi rmed kill.” Instructions are delivered into each squad leader’s ears as their radio implants (which double as ear protection for weapons blasts and concussion grenades) burst to life: “Go go go.” Each teams begins their assault, zip- lining in through shattered windows, skylights and attic openings.
