I fully endorse Peggy. She is the right person who will make reforms that put taxpayers first and create more transparency; and Peggy will repeal the food tax. Peggy and I don't see eye to eye on every issue, but we both care about the people of Phoenix and believe we can be much better.” Councilmember Sal DiCiccio This month’s report from justice Steven Sarkis Each summer, particularly once the monsoon season arrives and humidity increases, hundreds of warrants are signed in to prevent mosquitoes from over- breeding. While a small percentage of mosquitoes carry the West Nile Virus, excessive breeding increases the chances of people and animals being infected with the virus. Upon presenting a judge with probable cause, such as pictures and/or complaints, the warrants allow of fi cers from Maricopa County Environmental Services to enter potentially hazardous properties. These properties are suspected of posing a risk to the neighborhood as a result of green pools, green spas, or other bodies of water that may harbor breeding mosquitoes. Many of these properties are foreclosed or abandoned homes with pools that have turned green over time due to a lack of proper maintenance. In 2010, Maricopa County recorded its second worst season of West Nile Virus with 115 con fi rmed human cases. This year, the fi rst human case was con fi rmed in late June. To prevent mosquito bites, public health of fi cials recommend using insect repellent and avoiding outdoor activity after dusk and before dawn when mosquitoes are most active. In addition, to help prevent mosquitoes from breeding in and around your property eliminate areas where standing water may build up, such as bird baths, fountains, potted plants and other such areas. Rest assured that the large majority of individuals infected with West Nile Virus exhibit only a very mild illness or no illness at all. In fact, Maricopa County Environmental Services estimates that only one in 150 people infected with the virus will require hospitalization. Still, practice caution and common sense to avoid these pesky insects. If you know of a house with a green pool or other body of water that may be harboring mosquitoes, please report this to Maricopa County Environmental Services, as such properties pose a hazard to the neighborhood. For more information on West Nile Virus, to report green pools or fi le a mosquito- related complaint, call the Maricopa County Help Line at 602-506-0700 or go to: www.Maricopa.gov/wnv.
