Page 32 July 2011 Scottsdale youth wins club Youth of the Year award By Melissa Labrador In April, 18-year-old Olga Fernandez has been named the 2011 Boys & Girls Clubs Arizona Youth of the Year. Fernandez competed against seven other Valley teens. This month, she’ll participate in a regional competition. “I was de fi nitely in shock,” Olga said of the moment when the winner was announced. “A lot of people competed, so I’m honored to represent.” A 10-year member the Boys & Girls Club Rose Lane Branch, Olga found the Scottsdale branch to be “a stable place to come after school.” The relationship between Olga and the Rose Lane Branch was not one of instant harmony, though. “When I was younger, I used to run out of the building screaming and would misbehave purposefully,” she said. Cilla Neri, a Boys & Girls staff member who met Olga when she and her brother, Ricky, fi rst arrived at the Rose Lane Branch, remembers the dif fi culties Olga faced in her early years. “When Olga fi rst started at the club, she was an angry girl,” he said. “Through the mentoring of staff and her involvement in countless programs, she has evolved into an independent, strong adult.” Olga said courage “is the biggest lesson” Olga Fernandez she has taken from her experiences at the Boys & Girls Club. Neri said Olga has been through a lot in her time at the club. “I believe she has done a fantastic job overcoming the challenges she has been faced with,” Neri said. Page 33 July 2011 Shemer director enhances museum, class offerings Shemer’s new director, Jocelyn Hanson. By Sarah Nixon Shemer Art Center and Museum’s only full-time employee manages art classes, exhibits, lectures, special events, the website, part-time staff and volunteers, and is accountable for fundraising and grant writing. She’s also credited with energizing Shemer during a trying fi scal time. Jocelyn Hanson, Shemer’s executive director, came on board in September after Shemer was affected by city of Phoenix budget problems. First the center was cut from the city’s 2009-2010 fi scal budget, but then an agreement was reached in which the city’s parks and recreation department would oversee maintenance and repairs of the grounds. The Shemer Arts Center and Museum Association provided $75,000 last year to keep the doors open, and now is responsible for all staf fi ng, exhibits, computer infrastructure and phones. Funding is generated through donations and a $35 membership fee. “In a way, we’re starting from scratch,” said Hanson, who has brought on additional board members to help stabilize the situation. Laura Cohen-Hogan, a Shemer Arts Center and Museum Association board member said Hanson’s part in the rebuilding efforts has all been for the good. “(Her) creativity and energy enhance every event and happening being planned at Shemer,” Cohen-Hogan said. And the mix of people Hanson has brought to the board is the best –“from all backgrounds – law, architecture, design,” she said. Goldwaith Dorr, another Shemer board member, said Hanson’s “positive nature is infectious. Continued on page 43 BEAT THE HEAT!
