Page 30 July 2011 “We brought some bananas to feed the horses, some sausages for her dogs, and most importantly, a doughnut for Joyce herself. It was a fantastic idea and well worth the money.” With sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70s every day, Nick and Christina said they took pleasure in weather similar to California, but more humid. They went to Ocean World one day, “similar to Sea World, but without the rides or the crowds,” Nick said. “We swam with the dolphins and hung out with sea lions. My favorite part was probably having a sea lion lie on my lap. I could tell that was Tina’s favorite part as well.” The ticket and animal interactions together cost $130 each, and were the most expensive activity of the trip. Loving life on this split Caribbean island of Hispaniola, shared with Haiti, some stray dogs wandering around and mopeds seemingly the transportation mode of choice were the only normalcies that seemed a bit out of the ordinary. “They drive those things like go-karts over there,” Nick said. “(The locals) like to party, relax, eat and socialize. (The local culture) had a real laid- back feeling to it, much like Barcelona. “Almost everybody we encountered could speak English or at least get their point across. We really didn’t have any problems whatsoever.” The hotel cost $480 after taxes for both of them for the entire stay. That price included pick-up and drop-off from the airport (a good 30-minute drive from the hotel), all food at the hotel and beverages, including beer and mixed drinks. “It is an insanely cheap deal,” Nick said EDITOR’S NOTE: Nick Kalil is the writer’s brother; they grew up in Arcadia.
