Page 27 July 2011 Though occasionally his face is too passive to read what emotion he’s portraying, it can be assumed that George is trying not to show emotion, or has no emotion, and that fi ts the scene. Emma Roberts does a fi ne job as Sally, though her character is rather less likable than George. Though Roberts is portraying Sally as well as she can, there are issues with the character herself that aren’t the actress’ fault. Sally’s supposed to have relationship issues, and not have many friends, so the audience should feel sorry for her and like her because she’s trying. However, she still comes across as stringing George along and playing with his feelings. Since the movie was already set up for everyone to like George and want him to succeed in whatever he’s trying to accomplish, Sally toying with his emotions and saying “We’re just friends” all the time isn’t helping us to like her. Despite whatever problems there are with Sally, George pulls the movie together with his odd charm and the story earns 3 ½ stars. X-Men: First Class Director: Matthew Vaughn Actors: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Kevin Bacon Once again, Hollywood gives us a glimpse at “how it all began,” this time with the X-Men. The movie gives us younger versions of Charles Xavier (McAvoy) and Erik Lehnsherr (Fassbender), soon-to-be Professor X and Magneto, and how they met. We also meet some more characters, some good, some bad, all awesome. Though it is the prequel to the X-Men movie series, I wouldn’t advise you to see it fi rst. It would be like watching the new Star Trek movie that tells you where Captain Kirk and Spock started before watching the original show. Or like watching Star Wars movies four through six, explaining where Luke Skywalker’s dad started, before watching one through three featuring Luke himself. Take my word for it, you’ll lose some of the impact and fun. The movie starts with Erik’s past during World War II, when a man named Sebastian Shaw (Bacon) discovers Erik’s talent with metal and threatens to kill Erik’s mom as a way to get Erik to show him what he can do. Shaw then decides to train Erik to control his power and strengthen it, taking him under his wing in the worst sense of the phrase. The movie lets us see Charles when he was younger and how his past ties into Raven/Mystique’s. Their stories eventually intercept Erik’s, and the three join together and collect even more mutants using the fi rst prototype of Cerebro (what Professor X uses to fi nd mutants by enhancing his telepathic abilities), which was built by Hank McCoy, aka Beast. The story could use a little work. Although it was a nice effort to tie in a little United States history, there was a little too much and it bogged down the story instead of enhancing it. Perhaps the writers may have had to include that since they had already set Erik’s past during WWII and they couldn’t just ignore the history between then and now. It’s surprising how well Fassbender can pull off a younger Erik. Even though at fi rst glance he doesn’t look a whole lot like the Magneto we know today (played by Ian McKellen), they start looking more similar as the movie progresses. Perhaps it’s the story, or maybe the actor convinces you, but whatever it is, it works. Fassbender has just the right expressions and delivers his lines totally in character. McAvoy, on the other hand, is very far from the “present-time” Charles Xavier (played by Patrick Stewart). It’s understandable that the character started out very different from how he is now, but it’s expected that the movie might show some of the character’s progression toward where he currently stands and that isn’t shown much in this movie, if at all. It’s very hard to picture this Xavier turning into Stewart’s Xavier, and the fact that McAvoy looks nothing like Stewart just adds to that. Though the movie isn’t quite as good as the original X-Men movies, it’s a lot of fun and full of great action. I rate X-Men: First Class 3 ½ stars.
