Page 24 July 2011 Arcadia singer-songwriter started young on guitar Anamieke Quinn By Catherine Crook When Anamieke Quinn’s father gave his little girl a guitar, he handed her a gift that would shape the rest of her life. She wrote her fi rst song when she was 12. An Arcadia native, Quinn attended Ingleside Elementary, where one of her teachers changed her life forever. “I was about 11-years-old and our strings teacher had us playing at blue grass festivals in Payson and Wickenburg. We all wanted to play classical music since it was what we were used to,” Quinn said. “Instead, she had us wear out fi ts that looked like Colonel Sanders and play folksy music, which at the time I didn’t want to do.” Quinn said that although she hated it at fi rst, “I look back on that as being something that made me interested in the type of music I play now. “If it weren’t for that, I would be in a completely different place today.” After high school she attended Phoenix College for two years before transferring to USC, where she earned a degree in Music Industry. Following college, she spent three years with Capitol Records before returning to Arcadia to continue her life as a songwriter, singer and entrepreneur. Today, Quinn sings and plays upright bass in the Sara McAllister Band. She also performs solo gigs around town. “I am very hands on, I write all of my own songs … my songwriting process has changed quite a bit over the years,” Quinn said. “I used to hear the words fi rst. Now I play and the words come to me. “It happens very naturally.” Her newest development is the creation of her new band, Treasurefruit. Continued on page 28 602-954-7072 3546 E. Page 25 July 2011 Pets on Parade host still working for animals’ good By Liam Hausmann Marge Wright, the longtime host of Pets on Parade, a local television show hosted by the Arizona Humane Society, holds the same ideals today as when she began volunteering for the group more than 50 years ago. To Wright, the most important thing about interactions between humans and animals is for people to be what she calls RPOs, or Responsible Pet Owners. Rose Kirk, Wright’s daughter, said that phrase has been Wright’s mantra. “That, and her three L’s she taught kids in elementary schools,” Kirk said. “Love, license, and leash.” Wright said what drove her to get involved with the humane society is the same thing that kept her there for so long. “Because I like animals, but not the way a lot of people treat them,” she said. Although Wright stepped down from her position as host of the longest running local television show in the Valley earlier this year, she still volunteers. Sharon Kinsella, the manager of volunteer services at the organization, said Wright did much more than host the show. “(Wright) volunteered there more than she worked there,” Kinsella said. “She would come in a couple times a week, as well as hosting the show.” Kinsella said many people looked up to Wright. “So many of our volunteers and staff grew up watching her on TV, so she was a source of inspiration,” Kinsella said. “It’s because of her warmth and kindness to people.” Wright said she began volunteering with the humane society in 1957, organizing donations at the organization’s thrift store. After volunteering for eight years, she became an employee. “Before the thrift store, I was a payroll clerk at a company called Stewart Title,” she said. “I had a lot more fun at the thrift store.” Wright said from the beginning, she worked to get animals adopted. Whether it was keeping the store clean or keeping the animals clean, the point always was to get pets into proper homes. Kirk, Wright’s daughter, said the owners almost always get the better deal out of taking in an animal, and that she knows from personal experience. “When I had breast cancer, my dog Benji, before I even got my test results back, would not leave my side. He knew something was wrong,” she said. Continued on page 28 The state’s largest no-kill shelter will offer a one-day sale of cats and dogs. The Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA shelter estimates that 42,000 animals are euthanized each year, most of them eligible for adoption. From 10 a.m.-8 p.m. July 30, the shelter, located at 30 North 40 th Place, will charge adoption fees of $25 for dogs, $50 for puppies, $5 for cats and $25 for kittens. All animals will be spayed or neutered, microchipped, and up to date with vaccinations. Pets on sale at shelter KACHINA Quality Dry Cleaning 602-955-5540 3926 E.
