Page 32 June 2011 Arcadia High grad bikes neighborhood with style By Lauren Fach Stephanie Lough, 23, views the world from the seat of her bike. And, what a fancy bike it is. The 2005 graduate of Arcadia High School and 2009 Arizona State University graduate is back in the neighborhood after a stint in Denver, working her dream job at HMA Public Relations and customizing bikes on the side. The seed of her hobby was planted when her parents gave her a vibrant blue beach cruiser with multi-color patchwork decals, a padded seat and sleek brown handles while she was at ASU. Lough said she loves having things that stand out and this bike was bright, girly and unusual. Stephanie said her love of biking really got into gear when she lived in Tempe and could easily ride around town. Page 33 June 2011 Local landmark restaurant keeps name as well as aim By Nicholas Herrle On the northwest side of 52 nd Street and Thomas Road lies a little hole-in-the- wall Arcadia landmark – Di Vito’s Italian restaurant. “Everything here is from scratch, the dough, everything is fresh,” said owner Amin Khalil. He bought the restaurant in 1996 and said he has kept the menu and name the same as the previous owners since 1975. A restaurant was fi rst established on the spot in 1972. “Lew Di Vito named it, and when George Apostalakos bought the restaurant he kept it,” Khalil said. “So I did as well; there is no need to confuse people.” Before the restaurant became Di Vito’s in 1975, it was known as Decadence, Khalil said. Although Khalil is from Lebanon and moved to Arizona in 1985, he said he has kept the tradition of Di Vito’s Italian fare alive rather than adding any ethnic dishes from his homeland to the menu. “It was important to me to keep the menu the same as when the business started,” Khalil said. The business has been able to sustain success for so many years, Khalil said, because the restaurant caters events, as well as offers a dine-in, carry out, and delivery options. “We use the best quality of food here, but at a reasonable price,” Khalil said. “That’s what helps fi ght chain competition: people come back for the quality of the food.” Robin Woodward, an Arcadia resident, said he fi rst ate at Di Vito’s in the mid 80s and has passed on the tradition of eating there with his son Zach. “It has been a staple in the community for years,” Woodward said. “The food has always been yummy.” Khalil said he saves money by doing his own shopping sometimes to save on shipping costs. “It keeps the business easy on money, but not on labor,” he said. Still, Khalil said he wouldn’t have it any other way. “The time you invest, and the quality you put into your food, makes you feel good,” he said. “I love my customers, and it feels good when you’re in the community and people know who you are and what you do.” Di Vito’s is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday. “The best way to keep a community hot spot going is to show support,” Zach Woodward added. www.ontracktutoring.com/ ARCADIA (480) 563-5588 call today!
