Page 30 June 2011 Club seeks to assist deaf from downtown campus By Rachael McBride Arizona State University students said they are promoting awareness of deaf culture through a newly established American Sign Language club. “Sign language is such a fun, expressive language,” president sophomore Michelle Rivas said. “I wanted a way to get more people connected with the local deaf community.” Founded on the downtown campus in February, the club has put on two promotional events so far to raise awareness about deaf culture. In April, a local organization called Ability Counts Tempe hosted a What’s Your Ability? event on Hayden Lawn at the Tempe campus, which demonstrated what it feels like to lose different abilities. Members of the sign language club handed out earplugs that muf fl ed sound, simulating deafness to hearing students. “I think the activity really put things into perspective for how easy daily life is, compared to those with disabilities,” Rivas said. “Without a sense of hearing, people have to rely on everything else.” Rivas said she started taking sign language as a way to connect with a part of the community. “I already know English and Spanish, so I was looking for a new challenge,” Rivas said. “I didn’t realize I’d fall in love with it. It really opens you up to new experiences with a diverse group of people.” During spring semester, club members met with high school junior and seniors from the Phoenix Day School for the Deaf and gave them a tour of ASU. “Students seemed relieved to see there’s a community here that accepts them,” vice president sophomore Vaughn Hillyard said. “They may not be surrounded by deaf people, but we want them to know they would never be alone.” Hillyard said one of the club’s main goals is to make hearing-impaired students aware of the resources and opportunities available to them. “One of the kids asked me if he would be allowed to play sports here,” Rivas said. “I told him ‘Of course you can. You’d be a student like anyone else.’ It was really sad realizing the kinds of discrimination they’ve faced in the past.” The club currently has about 30 members, but Rivas said she hopes to continue expanding with new students in the fall. Page 31 June 2011 Summer list of best fi lms By Julie Demetros School’s out and it’s time to hang around and watch movies all day. If you’re lucky enough to have the summer free, there are plenty of movies out there to fi ll the next few months in between a little swimming and computer time. Here are some great, animated fi lms for babysitting purposes to keep the little ones occupied or just for entertainment. And since everyone loves countdowns, I’ve created one for each category. Classics Among the classics are the original Disney princess movies such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid and more, but here is a countdown of the top movies that people don’t always think of when they hear “classic animated fi lm.” 5. Wallace and Gromit (1989) (G): With many 30-minute movies behind them, Wallace the inventor and his loyal dog, Gromit, go on exciting adventures. Their most recent adventure being the full-length fi lm Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit , 2005. 4. James and the Giant Peach (1996) (PG): James, an orphan living with his mean guardian aunts, befriends human- like bugs living inside a giant peach as they go on a journey to New York City. Based on the novel by Roald Dahl, the abnormal animation makes it even better. 3. Yellow Submarine (1968) (G): The Beatles travel with Captain Fred in his Yellow Submarine to Pepperland to free it from the evil Blue Meanies who hate music. There are plans for a remake of this beloved classic, though the original will be dif fi cult to top. 2. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) (PG): Jack Skellington, the King of Halloween, becomes tired of his world and he discovers Christmas Town.
