Page 8 May 2011 Dr. Claire Bowey Stay safe in Valley heat By Claire Bowey, M.D. Our summer heat is never a surprise, but year after year, people underestimate how quickly the weather can make a person sick. Dehydration is the early warning sign. Have you ever felt blah, like something is wrong, but you don’t really know what it could be? Physicians see patients all the time with vague symptoms – muscle aches, fatigue, back pain, lightheadedness – that turn out to be dehydration. Even normal activity in the heat – running errands or walking a couple of blocks to lunch – will dehydrate you. Certain prescriptions, such as blood pressure, diabetic, and thyroid medications and antidepressants, can predispose you to dehydration. Check with your physician, particularly if you are exercising in the summer. Remember to avoid heavy outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., wear sun screen and loose- fi tting, open weave clothing and a hat, and drink lots of water. Water is best. Drinks with caffeine will dehydrate you. Check the sodium levels in sports drinks if you are on a salt-restricted diet. Recommendations vary on the amount of water to drink, but about two quarts a day is average, more if you have a lot of caffeine or are outside. If you are thirsty, you already are dehydrated and should drink. If you are exercising outdoors in the morning or evening, drink about 16 ounces before you head out. Then drink about 8 ounces every 20 minutes. Older people and babies are not good at regulating their own body temperatures and should be particularly careful with any outdoor activity and with getting into hot cars. Make sure seats and buckles aren’t too hot to burn; the metal can cause fi rst-degree burns. Keeping a spray bottle of water in the refrigerator and misting into the car will help lower the temperature inside the car just a bit, too.
