Page 6 May 2011 Report from Judge Sarkis Over the past six months, or so, I have presided over more cases involving bed bugs than ever before. Bed bugs are fl at, reddish brown insects that look strikingly similar in shape and size to an apple seed. They can be found in walls, furniture, and most commonly, mattresses. To make matters worse, they feed on sleeping humans throughout the night. In one case a man brought in a jar of dead bed bugs in support of his case. In another case, one that I will not soon forget, an apartment manager and attorney were requesting an immediate eviction of a gentleman from his apartment unit. The bed bugs were so bad in his unit that they had spread into the two surrounding units. The pictures of this man’s unit will be dif fi cult to purge from my brain no matter how much I’d like to. Amongst a room riddled with hundreds of empty beer cans was a mattress with no sheets and what must have been thousands of bed bugs. There were even bed bugs in the refrigerator. Experts say that bed bugs often come from people bringing used furniture onto a property without knowing where the furniture has been.
