Page 4 May 2011 By Dale Messmer There’s Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Every day is Kid’s Day. We have dates honoring all sorts of pets, popular presidents and persistent health problems. Nothing for the folks who choose to be childless. I have several good friends who are childless by choice. I have just as many friends who mistakenly believe that must be because of a medical condition or sel fi shness. Sometimes it is neither. Some people actually select to live sans offspring. With all the poor (or downright horrid) parents on the planet, we should celebrate those who know that child raising isn’t for them. At least they’re thinking before reproducing. We always need more of that. Of course, we need children, too, or the insects will win the battle for the planet. I worry the cockroaches have already mutated into politicians. So we have some ideas for you on how to make Mom happy on her day this year. Starts on page 18. One of the best things moms have to offer, however, are their kids. Motherhood’s present to the people is a child who will be a productive member of society. We have some stories by and about such kids this Mother’s Day month. Max is back. Max McCauley, our correspondent from Hopi Elementary School, writes about one of the school’s popular teachers getting set to retire. Starts on page 12. Two other top-notch kids are featured on page 18. Lauren Fach tells us about another Hopi fi fth-grader and his work as a Best Buddy to kindergartners. And Jessica Abercrombie writes about one of Arcadia High’s bright young students and his most- recent academic accomplishments. Then there’s our monthly movie review by Julie Demetros, one of the fi nest 15-year-old writers I’ve ever read. Her report this month is on page 42. Finally, Wayne Schutsky takes a look at an Arcadia High baseball player who overcame injury to set the school stolen- base record. I know the baseball player. Great kid, from a greater family.
