Bruns Hambone is one of those “wise beyond his years” kind of kids. As a fi ve-year-old now, he can carry on conversations with nearly any adult about a variety of topics. He will eventually swing the conversation to one of his favorite themes like video games or Steve Nash, but he’ll carry his own all the way there. About six months ago, Hambone started a martial arts program called Kyuki-Do. He earned his fi rst promotion to a “yellow-stripe” belt recently, which is something I’m overly proud of. He has some pride in this accomplishment, too, but he’s also learning about humility and not being a braggart, which makes the sport all the more worthwhile. Anyway, Hambone is usually pretty serious about things. It can be a bit concerning, especially when you’re just trying to play freeze tag with Hambone and his little brother, who we will call Moodswing for the purposes of this column. Hambone asks a lot of questions. He even has questions about questions and eventually, you’ll fi nd yourself chatting with him about sustainable farming in Guyana, or the metaphysical, or why GI Joe is not rated ‘G’ – it could be any of these issues. Page 25 April 2011 Computer moves vital data from downtown to Tempe By Jerrod Glass Arizona researchers are using a supercomputer to relay genetic information that could hold the key to curing genetic diseases and even cancer. The Saguaro 2 supercomputer transmits masses of information from a lab at the Translational Genomics Research Institute in downtown Phoenix to Arizona State University’s Ira A. Fulton School’s of Engineering in Tempe to be analyzed. “We can’t fi t all of the data; it’s just too big of a data set,” said Gil Speyer, assistant research scientist at the university’s High Performance Computing Initiative. The large volumes of data being sent are entire human genome sequences, the genetic coding that makes up an individual’s DNA. Each set is 6 billion letters long, consisting of 3 billion base pairs, Speyer said. Amol Tembe, head of the research institute’s Collaborative Bioinformatics Center, compiles the genetic sequences from research specimens, people who volunteer to have their DNA coded, he said. By comparing the hereditary data of an af fl icted person to a standard human pattern, Tembe said researchers can identify exactly what genetic mutations account for various diseases, making the cures within grasp. “We must look at every single combination of genes,” Tembe said. “This is where supercomputing is critical.” James Lowey, director of the Translational Genomics Research Institute, is responsible for the function of the Saguaro 2 supercomputer. The Saguaro 2 transmits 108 terabytes daily, more than 10 times the volume contained in the U.S. Library of Congress, Lowey said. One terabyte of data would be the equivalent of the information that could be printed on 50,000 trees worth of paper, Lowey said. Once the data from the research samples are communicated to ASU’s High Performance Computing Initiative, Speyer and his team of engineers evaluate and catalog the genetic sequences in more than 5,000 processors, Speyer said.
