Titan nine looking for next step By Wayne Schutsky With a mixture of old and new faces, the Arcadia baseball team is looking in 2011 to build off of last year’s playoff season. “We really only lost one starter in our shortstop Jake MacWilliam,” said coach Ken Rudolph. Arcadia will miss MacWilliam, who now plays for the University of Hawaii. He led the team with a .429 batting average last season and provided steady offense from the leadoff spot. Stepping in to fi ll MacWilliam’s vacated spot at short will be veteran varsity player Gary Cornish and newcomer Michael Roberts. “Both of these players bring leadership and poise to the team,” said Rudolph. “They are good defensively and can swing the bat a little bit, too.” Cornish, a junior, batted .295 last season as a reserve in fi elder for the Titans. At the top of the order, Arcadia will look to speedy center fi elder Brendan Satran. The junior has great range in the out fi eld and is a major threat on the base paths. He also showed glimpses of power last season, belting a couple of grand slams. Leadership will come from seniors Thomas Schellhardt and Tim Janssen. “They do a great job leading us out there,” said Rudolph. Schellhardt will man fi rst base and pitch. Janssen can play a variety of in fi eld roles and will also backup starter Eddie Lyon at catcher. Lyon, also a senior, does a great job anchoring the in fi eld from behind the plate, said Rudolph. While Arcadia does not have one speci fi c power threat, the team will look to produce enough runs through small ball for the pitching staff. “We have enough kids that can make contact that we should be able to support our pitching staff, which was great last year,” said Rudolph. Arcadia took a lead early in the game on a goal by freshman Annie Sherman. The two teams then battled through an even fi rst half before Notre Dame tied the game off of a free kick. “Everyone was on their heels the rest of the game and no team really took over,” said Arcadia coach Daniel Polan. After two scoreless overtimes, Notre Dame prevailed thanks to a successful penalty kick. “It was a tough game, and we had a lot of girls playing through injuries,” said Polan. “It was disheartening to lose through penalty kicks.” It was the second year in a row that Arcadia made it to the state semi fi nals and lost on penalty kicks. The Titans started the season a little unsure of themselves because of the addition of several new players, said Polan. “It took a couple of weeks for the team to gel and for everyone to get in a rhythm with one another.” The team played in early season tournaments, and those games allowed the girls to become comfortable with one another before season play. “We tried to schedule some tougher games to see where we were at,” said Polan. Following the tournaments, the team went 10-2 during the regular season with its only two losses coming against Notre Dame and Flagstaff, the eventual state fi nalists. Arcadia received leadership from Chandler Broadrick and Maddie Thorn. Broadrick led the Titans with 24 goals on the season. “They work hard on and off of the fi eld and lead the other girls by example,” Polan said. “Their work ethic shows the underclassmen how to succeed.” Titan goalkeeper Molly Bohon was the vocal leader of the team. “She saved a lot of games for us over the season and always stayed calm and collected,” said Polan. The team roster included seniors Maddie Thorn, Chandler Broadrick, Molly Bohon, Aly Sica and Ashley Lewis; juniors Tianna Stewart, Jenny Lewis and Grace Kim; sophomores, Rachel DiTullio, Nicole Fisk, Natasha Friedman, Samantha Romanin, Spencer Smith and Anna Workman and freshmen Annie Sherman, Marissa Dominick, Karly McCauley, Anika Carlson, Sophie DeWolf and Tess DeWolf.
