Page 4 March 2011 By Dale Messmer I can’t remember exactly how old I was. Maybe 9 or 10. Sitting next to me on the team bus was my future freshman basketball coach at Tempe High. At the time, he was a senior at the school. And he was crying. The Buffaloes had just lost in the state basketball tournament. It’s the fi rst time I remember seeing someone who wasn’t a child cry over losing. Or get angry, which is the way others on the bus had reacted. Since then, I’ve seen many young men and women cry or scowl or stare into space when a successful season ends in defeat. The joy and the curse of sports is how much you care about the fi nal score. Especially if you’re a player. I learned that on the bus and saw it again last month at Titan Hall. The Buffaloes were on the winning side this time, though. Tempe beat Arcadia by one point and knocked the Titans out of the state tournament. It was one of those gut- wrenching losses, too, where there are so many reasons to cry. First, Arcadia was at home. It’s never fun to lose in front of your fans. It was such a loud crowd, too, with a section of students on their feet, stomping and shouting. Then there were two wins over Tempe during the regular season. Both were close games, but the wins were major reasons the Titans earned that high a seed. And they were one win away from playing in a professional arena. And they played a sloppy, mistake- fi lled game. And they got a bad break on a shot near the end. Then they made one fi nal mistake. Time to cry. Made me think of the bus. And that future coach, who had experienced something that eventually helped him teach young men how to win, to lose and to compete. So, to the team: you guys were fun to watch, and thanks for a great story to follow. Your season is the stuff readers like. Readers are good. We launched our website just as the team was hitting its stride, which gave us a chance to present next-day coverage of the fi nal weeks of their season. We’ll be doing more photos and stories about Arcadia sports. We’d like to have you try arcadiadaily.com. Even if you don’t like sports. There’s plenty of other stuff to follow.
