Page 46 March 2011 Cactus take center stage at annual growers’ contest By Brittany Morris Members of the Cactus and Succulent Society of America will showcase their best, their most unusual and their rarest plants at the Desert Botanical Garden on April 1-3. Held yearly, the event is a chance for longtime growers to enter their prized works into a judged contest. It also gives Valley dwellers an opportunity to purchase various cacti and succulents. “Some plants aren’t even judged, they’re merely there for the public’s interest and education,” said Steve Martinez, president of the Central Phoenix chapter. “We display plants and educate the public, we want to get them interested and encourage participation in the future.” Martinez is originally from New York where his plant-raising began, and he has traveled to Africa and South America. “I’ve met planters from all over the world and those are relationships that you have forever,” he said. “By traveling you get to see plants in their natural environment, to make it easier when you grow them outside of what they’re used to.” The local group started with 20 members 30 years ago and has grown to about 250 members who meet monthly at the Desert Botanical Garden. Lee Brownson, an of fi cer and member of the local chapter, is entering this year’s show. “I love the plants,” he said. “I like to participate because the community has a chance to see plants that they would never see otherwise. “A lot of them can’t even be in the Botanical Garden because they can’t survive. “Two or three of the goers might decide to make it a hobby, too.” Continued on page 47 Integrated Medicine I’m sick of being sick... tired of being tired! For instance, the Golden Barrel cactus is facing extinction in the wild, he pointed out. “A lot of times, no matter how much you want to save a habitat, it can’t be done. But the collections of odd ones, or the ones that can no longer survive in the wild are best to collect,” he said. “Otherwise, the plants would disappear forever. They all have something we can learn from.” The show and sale will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 1-2 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 3. Phoenix Country Day School programs will bene fi t from an art show and sale, Oil Paintings of the Southwest, featuring the work of Scottsdale artist Ann Taylor. The show is 6 p.m.- 8 p.m. March 18 in the Hormel Arts Center on the PCDS campus, 3901 E. Stanford Drive, Paradise Valley. Other artists participating are PCDS alumnus Stanley Casselman, local artist Beth Zink, who specializes in vibrant contemporary botanicals, and jewelry by Bijou of Scottsdale. The needs-based fi nancial aid program at the school will bene fi t from the proceeds. Some proceeds also will go to Project Excellence, a PCDS outreach program for fi rst-generation college-bound students from public schools. The PCDS faculty professional development program for the ongoing education of teachers also will bene fi t from the fundraiser. All work on display will be available for purchase. Admission is free.
