Emily said, “I needed to watch it carefully to follow the layered story. There was suspense and depth. “When Inception was over, I was amazed by the idea presented by the movie: entering a dream and changing the world around you using your mind.” The Social Network also claimed two votes for favorite movie. John Reniewicki, a 15-year-old student at Arcadia High School, said there was never a dull moment. Coltin Anderson, another AHS student and also 15 years old, said, “It really showed the upbringing of the best social network ever. I sat through the whole thing in awe.” Erin Foltz, 15, an AHS freshman, suggested 500 Days of Summer , because it was funny and different from other romantic comedies. “It had an unexpected ending,” she said. Lily Hall-Hartley, 13, an Arcadia resident and student at Arcadia Neighborhood Learning Center, said her favorite movie of the year was Tron: Legacy , especially for the special effects. Since she had seen the original version, Lily said the characters added in the new version were a good addition, although and it was also smart to keep some characters from the original movie. Lily said it was great as a sequel and that the movie people incorporated parts of the old movie, which made it even better. Axel Johnson, 13, an Ingleside student, said Iron Man 2 was one of his favorite movies from the past year. “It was action-packed,” he said. “It had a good storyline.” He also said it fl owed pretty well from the fi rst movie and said he believed it was gearing toward a longer series. Movies don’t have to win awards to be great. Just look at the wide range of fi lms represented by this small sampling of Arcadia teens and tweens. As we go to print, it’s not yet known who will win the golden statuette this year, but that doesn’t really matter to most teens. They just want to see a good fi lm, whether it wins or not. Band members consider their genre ‘rock of all ages.’ Greer and Fire have been friends for more than 10 years. Johnson fi rst heard Greer while he was playing a Gin Blossoms song in a bar and they decided to join forces, Libby said. Mr. P-body said he came to The Vig as a fan and a couple of Sundays later brought his bass with no intentions other than to play for fun. The band members have been playing together as Elvis Before Noon ever since. Pam Vincent, manager of The Vig Arcadia, said, “We love having them, they’re all local guys and have been in the music scene for a while.” The musicians were friends before they started playing together. “I liked them before I ever played with them,” Mr. P-body said. Arcadia resident Kimberly Holtzen is a fan. “Elvis Before Noon is so much fun to watch, they are obviously excited when they perform,” she said. Mr. P-body, who also is a local DJ, had marketing experience. “I branded my name Mr. P-body so I just had to brand Elvis Before Noon the same way.” The group rehearses and performs at such local venues as The Vig, the Valley Ho, and K O’Donnell’s. “It’s great playing at a neighborhood place and fi nally doing what you love,” Greer said. For Vincent of The Vig, “They’re really good and play for their crowd; they individually have a good following.” The band members have their own side musical gigs in addition to playing together as Elvis Before Noon. Greer grew up in Arcadia and all the band members are Phoenix born and bred. “The band is truly special because of their dynamic and their chemistry, it’s almost like they’re brothers,” Libby said. states the purses are both “a crazy style and a great deal.” “Every time we make one, we get bet- ter,” says Grace. And they aren’t the only ones who think so. They recently fi lled an order for a store in Telluride, Colo. While on vacation, the girls spotted the boutique, Hopscotch, and they didn’t hesitate to pitch their product to the owner. “Our bags are different,” says Sarah. The purses take anywhere from 35 to 90 minutes to make and range in price from $10 to $30. The product line also includes bows, bangles and wine bags, all made from 100 percent duct tape. Grace and Sarah say they usually work on the weekends when they have a break from school and their dizzying array of ex- tracurricular activities. “We whip them out,” says Grace while Sarah fi nishes “and chat up a storm.” “We don’t really think of it as a busi- ness,” says Sarah, “just time to catch up.” Even so, that doesn’t keep them from set- ting their sights high. They want to branch out and hope to see their merchandise sell- ing in New York City shops one day. In the meantime, there is a most impor- tant and more immediate goal: land a spot on Oprah. ArtWalk on Marshall Way hits 30 years of Thursdays By Amy Vogelsang For Cheyenne L. Rouse, a fi ne art photographer, the Scottsdale ArtWalk on Marshall Way has become an ideal location to display her own artwork alongside other art galleries. Rouse moved to Arizona in June and when she heard about the ArtWalk, she decided to open an exhibit. “This is where I need to be,” Rouse said. The ArtWalk is a street of art galleries that brings in locals and tourists alike. Although most galleries are open throughout the week, the doors are propped open on Thursday nights to provide a more inviting atmosphere. “It helps having the galleries open,” said local resident and monthly ArtWalk visitor Germaine Halderman. “People are less intimidated and more prone to walk in when the doors aren’t closed.” ArtWalk has been a Thursday night event for 30 years. “It gives an artistic feel to the town,” said Ashley B. Martin of Bentley Gallery. “Or at least I like to think it does.” ArtWalk also brings in many collectors from around the world as well as a lot of local students, said Veronica Graf fi us, managing partner of Calvin Charles Gallery. Similar to the Scottsdale ArtWalk, the Downtown Chandler Art Walk offers a variety of artwork as well as live music on the third Friday of every month. Downtown Mesa also does its part to promote art with Second Fridays. Businesses stay open later for dining and shopping while vendors and live entertainment liven up West Main Street. Another popular art event, especially among young people, is First Fridays in downtown Phoenix.
