He puts on safety presentations that offer various lessons on safety, teamwork and con fl ict resolution. “Clowning is all about imagination,” he said. (He branches out during the holidays and often can be seen in a red suit with white fur trim, black boots and sporting a long, white beard). Ruffennach said it takes about 45 minutes for him to get done with his costume, makeup and get into character for clowning. “It helps if you’re in a happy mood,” he said. “For the most part, I’m pretty upbeat anyways.” Ruffennach said he has about 12 different characters he uses, and also works with clowning partners that he’s known since working with the Scottsdale Police Department. “It’s really good to have a person who’s upbeat and a low-key person working together,” he said. “The unexpected is what we’re looking for.” Ruffennach offers classes and conferences throughout the year and travels around the country teaching others how to be clowns. “The thing that is priceless is the smiles on people’s faces,” he said. More information is available at www.safetyprofessionals.us and www. smileclowns.org . Farm Continued from page 14 She also toured Sydney via cruise around the harbor, where she saw the harbor’s cliff faces from a whole new perspective. By foot, she said, she relished in “simply walking around the city, visiting the gardens and seeing Sydney’s amazing architecture.” She admitted she found herself missing the desert landscape and mountains while abroad and even ended up hiking Camelback Mountain on her fi rst full day back in Arizona. Still, “Australia has always held a certain fascination for me and I simply had my heart set on going there,” she said. “Study abroad seemed to be the perfect time to go as it afforded me an extended time to travel and explore the country. I can’t imagine not going back.” Mary is back studying at Scripps College in Claremont, Calif., with plans to pursue a doctorate of physical therapy after she graduates in May 2012. The lazy lull that overwhelms every hot day on these islands will overcome you and you’ll be rocking that hammock quite nicely by the time you leave. The island lifestyle sinks into you as quickly and naturally as a good tan on vacation. Be sure to eat plenty of fresh pineapple. I recommend visiting El Nido, Palawan and staying at The Alternative Restaurant & Bar. Great fruit smoothies, wonderful atmosphere and private beach cottages for about only $20 U.S. a night. The War History Buff From northern Hanoi to southern Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam, like much of Southeast Asia, is fi lled with war history. Delve deeper into Arizona history on the other side of the world by visiting what’s left of Hoa Lo Prison in Hanoi. Nicknamed the “Hanoi Hilton” by U.S. prisoners of war this dismal place is where Sen. John McCain was held. Down south in Saigon, crawl through the Neighbor Continued from page 20 Tips Continued from page 20 Cu Chi tunnels to get a solid taste of what Viet Cong life was like. The Romantic I don’t believe I’ve been anywhere more romantic than Italy, from Rome’s impressive architecture to the Vatican City’s exquisite Sistine Chapel to the captivating atmosphere of Venice’s narrow canals and charming gondoliers. As we all have heard how “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” don’t make the same mistake I did, but rather be sure to give the eternal city enough discovery time to not feel like it’s a race. I recommend wining and dining at one of the outdoor restaurants in Rome, right next to the mystifying Pantheon. You can’t go wrong with the spaghetti and a bottle of Italian red. The Outdoorsman Welcome to a place where the sheep- to-human ratio is about nine to one, rain can unexpectedly show up at any time and Christmas traditions include barbecuing out on the patio and soaking up the hot, midsummer sun. New Zealand is de fi nitely the place to go if you love being outdoors and have always wanted to know what it would feel like to live in a Lord of the Rings movie Hit up Rotorua on the North Island for some gravity-propelled luging and grassy downhill zorbing. Head south to Glacier Country and stare up at the most massive ice-cubes you’ve ever seen, Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers. Voyage out into the Tasman Sea and feel yourself suspended between the paradise of the skies above and the mountainous utopia enveloping you at Milford Sound. Get your extreme on in Queenstown and perform a 197-foot free fall drop at 93 mph from atop Shotover Canyon. You’ll be surprised how quickly the local kiwis’ love for reckless recreation and debauchery will rub off on you. And you’ll return home a stronger person because of it.
